The Matt Grimes problem? (2 Viewers)

Robins was great at knowing where a players level was. So many got us to the next level then straight out. Said it since the 1st half against arsenal grimes looked like he was running in quick sand and was laughed at. In that formation he's too slow to the ball or react.

Biggest concern today was the players heads dropped also
Thing is we knew he would struggle physically before the season even started. We stayed with him out of sentiment.

he cannot play him on weds, surely. a golden opportunity to try something/someone else.
if he plays grimes on weds then there is no hope for us, and i think it will be the trigger for people to seriously start to question lamps' position.

Honestly starting to think he's not all that great a captain either. Giving shades of Ben Sheaf; seems to be really soft and submissive, and the lack of combative leadership is starting to show.
I think it tends to be when I player is focused on his own game because he knows it’s not up to scratch. He’s struggling so much that his captain duties fall by the way side

We’ve had several players fall victim to their own success in the 10 year climb. People just seem to be really stalling this time. Grimes is just one of several in the current squad.

I was saying it before the end of last window. Its not saying hes a bad player, some just reach their ceiling and you have to move on past them

I think it is not contradictory to say Grimes was amazing last year, but that those same qualities can’t be replicated in the PL. Different skills have different leaps from each league. What he brought to us in the championship he is not bringing now.

His main strength is his range of passing, not that we’ve seen quite enough of it in his time here if I’m honest. At Championship level he’s probably the best passer on the pitch in any given game - in the PL he’s probably not in the top 5 on any pitch. First half yesterday - and I appreciate we didn’t have loads of the ball - he completed 7 passes. Thats just a fundamental waste. I wouldn’t say anything he did was bad, he just wasn’t in the game at all.

Central midfield starting to look rather honking.

Yep agreed. He doesn’t have physicality, his set pieces and crosses add nothing (they never have), he’s not retaining us possession, he’s not breaking up play and he doesn’t get us goals. Worse than all of that, we play a tactical game around him that makes us a worse team. I’m sure it’s awkward for Lampard to drop his captain, but I would think a winner like him would be ruthless enough to make the decision that needs to be made.

For me we have to just get the Forest game out of the way and then work on Hamer and Yrenki and max there fitness levels, we then need to see how they can start playing games together. Villa cup game could come at a good time to start looking at options as it isn't working.

Currently Grimes just doesnt impact enough. The attributes he bought last year have been cancelled out by the quality we face each week. Yirenkyi, Onyeka, Rudoni, a fit Hamer and even Eccles would now offer us more in there. Rightly or wrongly Lampard probably needed to see it laid bare like yesterday to act. But he has to now.

We have a teachers pet problem. Unfortunately the only way I see him coming out of the team is if he gets injured.

Been saying it since February that its the key position to upgrade. Im glad people are coming round to my way of thinking after giving me abuse all summer about it.

Sunderland did it right when they went up. First signing was Xhaka then built the other signings around him. Dean Austin has fucked up royally this time around. Just brought Kids. Personally the 20 million or so for Rushworth is a complete waste of money. He looks like a rabbit caught in headlights anytime a ball comes near him. So much money squandered.

DA will be acting on what Doug has told him to look fir abd that's talent he can make money from if we do go down or stay up, which is the young players. It's not squandered as he'd get at least his money back. The problem is we need them ready ti go. I suspect our best game will be at the end of the season after experience, age, development and coaching. Hopefully it's not too late.

It's squandered if they're not actually very good, which is a gamble with young unproven players.

Sometimes talent doesn't kick in for a few years, which we don't have the time to allow to grow.

Possibly true, but we also give them more than 4 games when most have barely even played in those. It will take a while to settle and even know our best eleven. This is all magnified because Hull and Ipswich have both managed to land on some early success.

Oh just bore off.

I suspect its more a case that Yarenki is more dynamic but is a red card waiting to happen and more likely to win the ball and then pass to the opposition. I hardly think a manager is going to select a player as he gives him an apple in training.

Then we have to question why spend £25 million on Yirenkyi if he is not starting every single game for us. Could have bought Jensen for £10 million instead.

Because we are looking over the next couple of seasons to improve him and sell him at a profit

I thought we signed him, put him on the bench for the first four games, gave him a couple of cameos against tough opposition late on, then decided he wasn't up to it, we'd wasted £20+m on him and King/Austin/Lampard were useless. Obviously I didn't get the memo.

Also, if Grimes doesn't play, who leads?

I don't think Grimes is up to it at this level, but I suspect Lampard will be reluctant to drop due to lack of leadership elsewhere in the squad.

I'm not sure he leads either. He was leading from a position of respect and experience in the Championship, especially to the younger players. I'm not sure the current crop will see it that way as they possibly see him as a weaker link. Traditional leaders like Bidwell and Kitching aren't in the squad and Lati is nowhere near the team at present. I do think that lack of leaders is a problem for us and I don't know who is best placed and sensible enough, that will be a regular to take that responsibility. Possibly Onyeka, but I don't see leadership qualities in many.

Edit - maybe Pinnock?

Yes when he went off the Captaincy passed to JDS, probably the quietest person in the team. If it was passed on through "longevity" that is worrying. He wasn't great yesterday but surely it should have gone to Pinnock.

None of our midfield seemed remotely interested in putting a tackle in at all yesterday, we mostly ran along side them until they offloaded it!!!! I realise you commit yourself if you don't get it right but fuck me, why not try to win the ball back in the tackle. we look toothless in the centre. FTT had a couple of goes but that was it.
We need to stop being so nice.

Probably Pinnock, but I'm not convinced he's part of our best 11.

This grimes situation. Now I'm all for replacing him if we continue to play with the set up we have had for the first 4 games. It's not suitable for him. he looked lost. His game is in a team that plays out from the back where he collects the ball and gets things rolling. We stopped playing that way in fear of Arsenal, man City and Brighton. Understandable to a point, but the players are not suited to it. That's the issue. Not the players particularly. Rushworth is fine, not much he could do about any of the goals he has shipped tbf. My worry is we have bought players in that are not experienced at this level at all yet we expect them to hit the ground running? Pinnock is a good addition but I think Bobby and Amenda are pretty strong in there regardless. TBF we have not even started the team that got us promoted who possed a great knowledge of each others play. It's been undermined by dropping in raw talent like Yerenkyi or Cheriff. A lot of players are looking at 20m plus deals for players after their position and not afforded the opportunity to show what they can do. If they don't perform the new guys will take their shirt one by one. That would have been my strategy from game one. Confidence in your players is crucial. Their confidence is crucial. The 4 games may have been the same result but we would now be much closer to forming a settled starting 11?

Grimes is just doing what he did last year and dropping back to play a pass and expecting the same results. Surely that is down to the tactics however when it is elsewhere in midfield he is just chasing shadows

@lowblocklounge You are not thinking like trader Doug.

The way the squad has been built is about 50/50 experience and young players with potential. If you remember in an interview last season about how CCFC are doing he compared the squad value in the transfer market when he bought the club and at the time of the interview. A lot of his focus was on having the squad value that made his investment worth it, it worked well at the lower level and that strategy remains in place. It's a similar to the way a few other premier league clubs operate but they've had a few years to get better at playing the market while retaining their place in the top league.

Experience: Pinnock, Awoni, Hamer, Onyenka,

Player assets for Development: Yirenki, Rushworth, Cherif, Amenda, Tchaouna, Gboho

Player assets tbought in previous seasons to sell at profit but are below premier league standard: Bassette, Rapheal, Andrews, Dovin, Eccles, Torp
