But what the fee is affects what else we can do and who else we can bring in. So if they make the team and squad better then cost doesn't matter? Onyeka made them better, but if we'd paid £50m for him instead of £8m are you saying we should have just ignored that as it doesn't matter? Even though it would have meant we'd have then spent the money we then used to get Rushworth and Yirenkyi.

I like Awoniyi, but 17m would be a big risk given his injuries and his deficiencies. I can only imagine that it's either a typo or someone has got mixed up with the Cherif fee. At most it must have a lot of add-ons for performance and staying up. I just can't see Doug spending £17m on a 29 y-o with an injury history and a year left on their contract.
 
He's got Pl experience. Can score goals but also when I've seen him play he does have a good work rate for closing down and pressing.
Forest selling him means nothing as their owner has top 6 fantasies and probably doesn't see Awoniyi as part of that.
 
Not every signing can be a football manager wonderkid moneyball type.

We need some leaders with experience of staying up in the PL to help the wonderkids and the players stepping up from the Championship make the step up and this is exactly what Awoniyi will bring.

He clearly won't play every game but based on the testimonials from Forest fans you can guarantee he will bring out more than 17m worth of development in the young players around him.
 
Hello, another Forest fan here - popped in to see the reaction on here and thought I'd chip in.

OK, there will be times the ball will bounce of his shins or he'll trip over his own feet and you'll think you've signed a right dud but then other times he'll power past a couple of defenders and bang in goal out of nothing and you'll find you've picked up three points in a game you could easily have lost.

Brief history - First season at Forest he was a key player, our first choice forward and regular scorer, one of the best of our 78 new signings and we wouldn't have stayed up without him. He started the second season well but then picked up an injury and never seemed to fully recover. He'd be missing for a while then when he'd come off the bench he'd just look so unfit. This went on for the best part of two seasons. Then just when it looked like was he was finished.....

Last season he probably wouldn't even have made our 25 man squad if it wasn't for injuries elsewhere but slowly but surely he worked his way back in. He was coming off the bench and looking sharp, fully committed, causing problems for the opposition and by the last couple of months was looking like his old self. He played a significant role in us staying up again, particularly the win at Chelsea that effectively sealed survival.



I can't be bothered to go back to quote the pillock responsible but someone earlier compared him to Robert Rosario:confused: Awoniyi has 21 goals in 35 starts. 21 goals in 35 starts!! Rosario barely has 21 goals in his entire career. If Forest had been able to sign Big T back in '93 instead of Big Bad* Bob we'd likely not have been relegated, wouldn't have sold Roy Keane to Man Utd and the whole of Premier League history would be different. Anyway, I hope the moves goes well for him, and all the best for the new season.

Delighted that we've brought in an older head with experience of helping to keep a newly promoted club in the league.

Really nice balance to our business so far.

You'd have to think there is a huge caveat on staying up+ his contribution i.e. he scores like a fifth or a quarter of our goals in doing so

Might be true. Might not be true.

I would guess in the middle. A fee of 10m to 12m with add ons. Extra amounts for things like appearances, goals scored and maybe a few million extra if we stay up.

Not a fucking chance we spent this on him.

It’s what Forest paid 4 years ago before his injuries. And he’s in final year of his deal.

I think £7m is very top end of what we’ve likely paid.

We’re not Forest paid £17m the rumoured fee we are paying is between £6-8m

7m doesn't buy you a Prem quality striker. Forest didn't buy him as a Prem striker. He became one with them.

We have several players about to make the step up. Those who do make the step up to the Prem will see their values go up massively.
 
He's a temp import ? We can’t have paid a lot but well In reach of a Championship team

Yeah that’s fair. I still think with the profile (age, injuries, contract) £17m sounds way too high.

I’m chuffed with the signing regardless if he stays fit.
 
Sorry is £17m a confirmed (strong source reported) fee?!? I thought it was the usual speculation.

I’m pretty sure moneyball was the exact opposite of getting wonder kids… not meant as an antagonistic post by the way, I get what you mean!

Interesting! My perception of moneyball was that it was to use data to buy young players who perform well beyond just goals/assists/clean sheets... I suppose that isnt really the same thing as a wonderkid though so fair enough!

The real money ball approach was from baseball and was formed on data around pitchers, catchers and hitters that otherwise big teams wouldn’t sign due to oddities such as a strange throwing style, hitting style, stance, height etc yet the data and stats backed up they’d perform at the higher level but hadn’t been given the chance due to perceived imperfections etc. This has since moved into football world of buy low sell high based on stats/data - no exactly the same but similarities on the approach for sure.

Given that both the potential signings have a reputation for not being great finishers I think we definitely need one added to the training staff.

More than 7m but with add ons to take it to 17m if all are met would be my guess.
