Confirmed Signing Stephen Mfuni - LCB + LB (1 Viewer)

I can’t recall a teenager having as good a defensive debut for us as that. There must be someone surely?

For us Garry Gillespie

Reminded me a bit of Gillespie but probably better on the ball. Calm on the ball and likes a clean tackle

Looks exclelent as I expected before signing him. Helps him having Thomas and Pinnock talking him through the game.

Looks like a Gvardiol replacement for City to me.

He was brilliant yesterday but come on - he's only played 2 games - comparing him to Gary Gillespie etc already 🙄

it was referring to someone on early appearances at 18

If we hadn't have signed him, we would probably have had to play Bidwell on Saturday.

Bidwell isn’t in the squad.

Doesn’t count towards the 25 man squad, Covers LB and CB, massively talented and probably costing us next to nothing. Was literally no down side to the signing but it didn’t stop people writing him off.

He wouldn't because Mfuni is u21 so not included in 25 man squad
Presumably they mean if Mfuni hadn't have been signed, there'd be no left side defensive cover, so Bidwell would've likely been included (perhaps at the expense of Woolfenden).

Needs to be our first signing next summer, sort of player you spend 40 million on
Conservative valuation, what was the difficulty in getting him in?
There are some toing and frowing wasn't there?

Only chance I can see of us getting him on a perm based on what I’ve seen so far is if we agree to one of those deals where we pay something like £30m upfront but the buy back is £35-£40m

It’s early days yet but I think there is very little chance of that, from what I have seen so far I don’t really see a ceiling to this lads potential and cannot recall watching such a mature 18 year old footballer

I think in 10-15 years time there is a very good chance we will look back and think ‘Wow he used to play for us’

No chance at all. He is with us to toughen him up and get him used to the men's game in the Prem. You can see the quality in him. His composure was excellent considering his lack of experience in the men's game let alone the Prem, and he will only get better.

He is going all the way to the top with Manchester City and England. We're very lucky to have him and he will play a big part in us staying up. It will be interesting to see who gets dropped to make room for him.

Can’t believe he was rumoured to be joining a championship team. He’d be a cheat code down there.

I don't know what you saw but Watford certainly wanted him back. He was still only 17 when he joined them in January but was impressive from the start. He would walk into any Championship side so I'm not surprised. I remember watching a video of him making his debut for them and getting a standing ovation when subbed off.

I imagine he’s come to us just to eradicate a tiny bit of the maverick. He does look like he might concede the odd goal through not wanting to row Z a couple. It’s going to be hugely enjoyable having him for a season though

A few people were assuming we had run out of money, taking an 18 year old on loan, but the reality is we were never in a position to sign anyone as good or better this year on a permanent contract.
Another example of needing to trust the management team.

I trusted the signing, but I was unsure I wanted an experienced head too and we got that, it was always a risk taking someone so inexperienced but that risk seems like its going to pay off. This can hardly be an “I told you so” or “Idk why you doubted him” signing, just enjoy him while we have him. I still stand by I would have rathered him permanently

You watch the insane valuation on the kids head next summer.

Be absurd like £50m+.

The COV loan effect.

Of course you’d prefer him permanently he’s one of the best young talents in the country. You said he wouldnt be near as good as Amenda or Thomas because he’d only played 9 games. People just said give him a chance before writing him off.

I said both, you still can’t compare him to Bobby or Amenda because we havent seen enough he has the qualities to be a top top CB, its hardly a crime to state a player who had only played 8 games was not what we needed at the time, also he was an unknown quality

Man City do tend to let good youth players go though. Sancho, Palmer, Bobb, Olise, Trafford, Frimpong etc. Wouldnt be beyond the realms, but its whether he would want it.
