Match Thread Coventry City vs Brighton & Hove Albion FC (H) - Match Thread - Sun 13th September (2pm KO) (5 Viewers)

They've also had a much, much easier start.

I don't think it should be underplayed just what a psychological effect that opening game would have had. Getting completely and utterly outclassed against Arsenal's no disgrace, but when it's your first game at the level and you've nothing to demonstrate to yourself that you can compete, that's harsh.

I'm not defending anything, but to say, 'oh, but Ipswich are doing ok' when the variables are so different doesn't really work.
Hull have had Man Utd and Chelsea and taken 4 points off them.

I thought we had gotten over that against Man City.

Really need Lampard to inspire some belief in the squad and fast as longer this goes on the harder it will become to solve
He did it last year to be fair, but he did it through signing Onyeka.

What I’m saying is what I saw in the 2nd half, we are second to every 50/50 or not putting the challenges in, we are standing off teams and not getting into them. That’s the difference between us and Hull and Ipswich.
Yup. I would say as well, some of the chances we had at 0-0 and 0-1 would have been converted by them, you could definitely say the same at Man City.

That none of them have been is a lack of quality, decisiveness or both.

Don’t think that was the same. Think that was more a case of illness and fatigue taking their toll on the squad.

Onyeka and the tweak to the tactics played a huge role but I never thought the squad lacked belief. Whereas now, we seem nervous and erratic in defence and defeatist at times.

In reality the gap between the two leagues is huge and getting bigger each season.
We have some top players for the Championship but there a lots of examples of Top Champ players who just can’t make the step up and sadly that’s the case with some of ours.
It’s really hard to see where the points or goals are coming from and I’m not sure personally that we have signed the right type of players for what we needed.
I knew it would be tough and relegation was likely I remember being at our last Prem Game against Bradford but I’d like to see us really give it a go.
Lampard needs to get them going and if he can’t then as we know with King there is no sentiment in football and it will have to change as something will have to give.
Let’s hope we can beat Villa and get something from Forest.

I would agree with this if the other teams coming up with us werent picking up wins.

I think it's fair to say that Hull have surprised absolutely everybody, probably themselves, too. Credit to them.
Yup, by putting up a fight with mostly Championship standard players. We have rolled over and had our bellies tickled to be laughed at by the rest of the league.

I’ve calmed down a bit since the match thread but there comes a point where you’ve got to show the same ruthlessness with the manager you’re asking the manager to have with his players. Not sure we’re there yet but we are heading there pretty quickly IMO.
Oh here we go. Totally ludicrous. Lampard is the brightest manager weve had in a long time. Absolutely no way we should even be thinking about that.

And this is the real problem, isn't it; way more than fucking up the transfer window or whatever; there's no belief at the moment. At all.

Doesn't matter who you bring in, if you don't believe that you'll win, you won't.
I dont get it though, because we ended last season on such a high we should have gone in having a load of belief. We had nothing to lose against Arsenal but we looked terrified. The summer was a weird one and totally seemed to sap the feel good feeling out of the club.

All of them seem absolutely sapped for confidence atm. Rushworth for example seems proper head down atm.

Grimes’ interview before the season going on about how hard it’d be to stay up and how much harder it’d be than gaining promotion was hardly the sort of thing you want your captain to be saying on the eve of a new season.

Gutting that. Actually thought we were ok for 30 mins but the 1-2 punch of the second goal and the red tanked us. I think big calls need making. Grimes needs dropping, a hero last season but he just doesn't get the time he needs on the ball to function. As we are struggling I'd rather energy when we are seeing so little of the ball.

Fucking annoying that Hull and Ipswich seem to have taken the leap. It does feel bleak but there is time to turn things around far too soon to be calling us down and out.
I though the difference was when Clarke had a chance to break and was as fast as a cart horse and out muscled by AYRE sorry could never spell his name , then Amenda get caught and their guy runs clear and scores. We just don’t have pace

I dont think its anything different to what Lampard said all summer though?

He's miles out of his depth at this level.

the players looked devoid of any confidence in their own abilities today, was very passive. Brighton were levels above us in terms of team understanding and playing their way through us at any moment.
To be fair when you set up with a back 5 at home your handing the initiative to the away team… we’ve set up trying not to lose rather than win a game

Yeh said it felt off at the time. The 2 teams promoted with us seemed to keep and further build real feel good factors around the clubs. Something around our club felt weirdly off.

We aren't even fielding the players we have signed

I mean its things like the comms, the kit, the random week off, the increased amount of behind closed doors friendlies. It was just totally weird.

I genuinely think that having to play Arsenal, on a high having won the league and just having rolled over Manchester City(!), as the first game had a huge detrimental effect.

The fixture list has been a c**t, frankly.

I don’t remember hearing much from Lampard over the summer? In fact I think there were complaints on here about how quiet he was!
He's had a fair few interviews hasnt he? Didnt he have one with The Telegraph

Yes because if his confidence is shot it will only get worse for him. Hard for keepers when they lose form or confidence, his head dropped after the fourth goal.
Dropping him would probably make it even worse and who’d you then play in goal?

We looked terrified in that game though
