Thing that bothers me is if you watched a highlight reel at Swansea he loved that long diagonal pass out to the wing. Can’t remember him doing that more than 5 times since he’s been with us.

He might have been our "best midfielder" last year, in a system and a league that let him shine, but he will not be this year. And I'd put money on it.

Perhaps it could be argued one or two personnel could be changed but I think the change in set up is the right approach to this game. I suspect Manchester will want to get the game won early and make changes at h/t ready for Europe

My immediate thoughts on the team are that (a) I’m surprised that we only have Lati as a defensive option on the bench, although we are hampered by Mfuni being ineligible to play (b) I would have liked to see Yirenkyi start, probably in place of Grimes (I like Grimes but with Onyenka also starting we lack pace in that part of the pitch) and (c) I think the formation is right for a game in which we are likely to be under the cosh for most of the time.

The reason Grimes is playing is because Lampard who probably knows a bit out midfielders thinks we need to at least attempt to try and keep the ball for more than 5 seconds and he doesn't think a 2 of Onyeka and Caleb can do that well enough. This means in this system it is one or the other, this then means the one picked plays alongside Grimes/Hamer or Torp. Hamer is in no physical shape to play CM at this level let alone start games so that means it was a choice of Grimes or Torp.

Grimes and Onyeka will attempt to sit in front of back 3 and will try and play a few passes between then as we will need to do this otherwise we run the risk of just giving the ball straight back to Man City.

I dont think anyone in their wildest dreams woukd be stupid enough to think or say Grimes will shine in this league.

I agree..today was a day for a quick turn around on the break with quick ball back to front. I know if I'm man City which player they woukd like Hamer or Grimes.
