This is bollocks. Football doesn't work like that and you know it.

If you want to play that game then how about if the defender doesn't lose his man at the corner then we win the game. Don't hear anyone giving the defender (was it Hyam? Not sure) dogs abuse.
And, if Burge could collect a corner on the edge of his 6 yard box (a basic requirement I'd say for a professional keeper) the player who was I asked for a free header doesn't have said free header and same outcome..... NO GOAL.

Yes. But you can apply that to just about every player in the squad.

Eg if Chaplin/Hiwula/Thomas finish more of their chances we win a lot more games
You could, and I'm sure if you look at this forum, each will have their own individual thread with their pros and cons being discussed. This thread is about Burge and his differences with Stockdale, so therefore Burge is getting a battering and rightly so.

Not really.

You saw the influence a keeper had, it calmed the defence for starters.

Let's not pretend that there aren't better keepers even at league 1 level that we could get. Fair play to those that like him and want to keep him here etc. Its all about opinions. He's not the worst keeper in the world and has good shot stopping but I want a keeper that can communicate with the team. Stockdale was great at it and gave us a taste but I consider this one of the basic attributes of a keeper and we've lacked this for a while hence why he stood out. Burge is almost silent. With other keepers you see them organising the defence etc before a corner is whipped in. Considering how many corners are conceded in a game its something we can't really ignore.

Not really? You don't think that if we scored more of our chances we wouldn't win more games?

We have conceded the 8th fewest goals in the league but have one of the worst attacks.

Keeper/defence isn't the problem, its the other end of the pitch that is.

Not sticking up for him but after seeingva decent keeper in goal for us he was gonna be on a hiding to nothing whatever he done but he duly obliged

Ridiculous argument. He made an error which cost us a goal, that had nothing to do with Stockdale.

A keeper influences from the back, it then passes onto the defence and even midfield.

Obviously Burge isn't responsible for missing, however if we have a keeper who struggles to catch and unnerves the defence on every cross it then puts more pressure to score every chance.

Sorry you're just talking rubbish now, essentially blaming Burge for us not scoring enough. Unbelievable!

Can't be bothered with this on a Sunday night. Enjoy your evening.

I read somewhere, on average 17% of corners creat a chance, and of those, 17% are scored. It was based on something like 13k corners. I feel like we're going to concede a goal at every corner.
Looking at those figures, I wonder what percentage of our corners (both attacking and defending) create a chance and goals?

Looking forward to the season being over for 2 reasons-
1) We might know where we are playing next season, if indeed we are.
2) At last Burge will finally be shown the door.

Yes and no. We soaked up an awful lot of pressure today. Our front 3/4 were bystanders for the vast majority of the game.
With all the pressure we had, what we needed was a calming influence at the back. Somebody to cut out the long ball and crosses. Somebody who could turn defence into attack with a catch and a nice through ball to the strikers.
What we had instead was Burge stuck on his line while Luton picked up loose ball in his area. Then panicking on the ball and putting us under more pressure with the wrong decisions.

Some posters on here seem to think it’s the easiest thing in the world for keepers to come out for corners to collect or punch. Neglecting the fact that teams load the six yard box with big lumps, which makes it difficult for a keeper to get near to the ball. So I don’t blame Burge for not coming out (if he had and been blocked, he’d have been pilloried), the problem was primarily the free header given to the scorer. Yes, he may have done better with the header, but it wasn’t primarily his fault.

I’ve said this before, we’re lusting after a keeper we can’t have, we’d be better off supporting the keeper we’re going to have for the rest of the season, and who made two decent saves at the death, to preserve a point for us.

Sorry he should come and claim balls like that. Stockdale proved how simple it is.

Makes life so much harder defending when you have a keeper even when the ball is curled into your own 6 yard box and he doesn’t come off his line.

When he has time to think he’s dodgy, when he doesn’t ie reaction saves he’s a pretty decent keeper!

Poor keeping, poor defending and no attacking intent or cutting edge.

Its clear from the stats that whilst Burge has made mistakes, the crux of the issues lies at the other end of the pitch.

Average goals scored per game 1.09 - 5th worst in the league

Only Wimbledon 0.88,bristol rovers 0.94 Accrington 1.06 and Blackpool 1.03 average less goals per game than us than us.

Even worse we have only Scored in both halves 5 times this season, only Wimbledon and bristol rovers have done it less and they are both in the relegation zone.

We have the joint 8th best defense goals conceded per game.

We keep hearing this myth that “Burge is the best keeper in the league” which we obviously know is L1. What’s more alarming is that people think he can go on and play in the Championship.
We all remember Joe Murphy who I thought was a reasonable keeper and again was at L1 level. Burge in reality couldn’t lace Joe Murphy’s boots. Shows really how poor he is. I was happy when I thought he was improving and proving lots of people including myself wrong but his 2 years at L1 level shows he will get no higher.

Your right, I've never been a fan of Burge. As a former keeper myself (granted, nowhere near L1 level but still) I've always watched his positional play and thought how shit it is. I've always praised him when he's done something well or had a good game but I tend to jump on his slightest mistakes.

With that said though, he just isn't improving as a GK at all. His reaction saves have always been good, but that is the only attribute of a GK he has. He can't catch, he doesn't talk to defenders, he doesn't patrol his area, his erratic when he has the ball, his distribution is poor at best. With nearly 150 games under his belt he's one of the most experienced players in our team atm, you wouldn't think that though if you were watching him for the 1st time.

I think I (like many others) was waiting for him to make a mistake today so I could jump on him. But it was never a case of IF he would make a mistake, just a case of when it would happen. It's inevitable.

As i said in another thread yes he makes some saves but ffs he needs to have some attributes as a goalkeeper because he cannot command his area he comes to catch a cross and invariably misses it, he cannot kick with reliability and now we have been enforced to try a new goalkeeper it has now made Stockdale appear as a demi god and shown how desperate it seems now to get a solid replacement

I’ve stuck up for Burge loads of times and although imo badly at fault for today’s goal he did come through what would have been for him for recent reasons a pressurised match. However I also think a change of goalkeeper next season is a must. BUT that can’t happen until the end of the season unless MR gives Addai the nod. So I suggest we all get off Burges back for the rest of the season.

Burge has fucked it I think. He or his agent appear to have been putting noises about championship clubs, most likely to get a better offer here, then he gets shown up by a better keeper which Robins has obviously noted and then comes in and makes another mistake leading to a goal. He can't be on much here but I'd never be offering him more than he's on at the moment, probably a wage reduction with an experienced backup in mind. He'd improved a lot but is regressing into old habits more and more as the weeks go by.

We saw what having a composed keeper did for the rest of the team, it sets the foundation we build upon. They don't have to make saves because the pressure just doesn't come.

Well done Grendel. Exactly the kind of negative and snide remark that I would expect of you - whilst others are enjoying a sensational away performance. I see you now as the type of fan who would much prefer to see the team lose so you can put the boot in.

Yep-the usual blunder from him that again gives the opposition the momentum. What I will say though is that he could have caved in after that mistake but 2nd half he was decent enough.
Still has to go in the summer.

2 or 3 good games does not make it ok to drop these terrible clangers every 4 games or so

Pretty desperate effort by him for the third as well

Always backed Burge but just lately he's not very commanding and the defence look jittery because of this - maybe time to give the young lad Corey Addai a chance as now nothing to play for

That first mistake left Sunderland back into the game if he claims that ball we go in 3-1 up and it's a different game. That one mistake had a huge bearing on the game. Unfortunately we need a better quality keeper as he has made some costly errors this season. He has made good saves too but some of the errors have been howlers. He seems to be gone backwards this season. Time to get a new keeper and goal keeper coach oggy oggy oggy out out out

Undoubtedly Burge at fault for the second goal yesterday. I can understand fans frustrations, it’s almost every other week where Burge is making an error and it’s costs us, no doubt he is a good shot stopper and has also earned us as much points as he’s lost us throughout the season, but I think he won’t make it much higher than our level if his levels of inconsistencies remain.

I was there yesterday. Terrible mistake which gave Sunderland momentum. Without that mistake we would have probably gone into half time 1-3 up.
He was OK 2nd half but he needs to go.
I’ve seen it on the highlights and still trying to figure out how he’s managed to punch the ball to their striker for a tap in.
