Reading 'Our Band Could be Your Life' nudged me to listen to this about 20 years after I meant to and it's incredible. Influence on so much that came after and it's weird hearing a US band ripping from Pop Group and Gang of Four this much.

I think its better that way that nobody knows about just the muso types that know .There loads of gig there and and the Record shop at Fargo this is best era now for Coventry's music since Ska in the 70s and Rave in the late 80s early 90s .

I go to a lot of gigs at Just Dropped In. Usually the ambient electronic type gigs.

Next there for me is Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan in September.

Decided to dust off the strat and relearn this, I feel the need to get away from screens and do something productive

Next day update: I'm frustrated and my fingers hurt

Minor Threat 'Salad Days' EP

Never heard this EP till last week and it's blown my mind how good it is. Worth seven mins. of your time!

Had to travel to Coventry earlier this week (for my son to sit an exam) and found myself with a couple of hours to spare. Popped into "Just Dropped In" to see what they had in the way of 50s/60s originals without any real expectations of what to expect.

Well...where to start with this absolute gem of a record store?!?!

It is probably as close to perfection as Revolver, Otis Blue, Never Mind The Bo**ocks, or The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill...depending on your musical palate.

Firstly, it's a lovely large, bright space in complete contrast to the average, somewhat cluttered and claustrophobic feel of most record shops carrying the kind of 2nd hand stuff that I collect.

But "Just Dropped In" doesn't just stock 2nd hand; in fact, it strikes the perfect balance between new and old, catering for brand new music, classic limited edition reissues, and a very healthy selection of well preserved originals up to 70 years old!
Add into the mix Gary and Allun, two top blokes who are completely down to earth with fabulous knowledge and a burning passion for what they do.

Even from one visit I can see that they've created not just a great record shop but a real vinyl community. On the afternoon that I dropped in they were preparing for one of their regular sold-out evening concerts (there is a good-sized stage, professional pa system etc) in which 100 or so music fans get to enjoy great live music in an intimate and very special venue.

Shops like this (and there aren't many!) are the lifeblood of real music in the UK and should be cherished. The effort and commitment that goes into creating and maintaining such a comprehensive and perfectly catalogued inventory whilst also arranging launch events and live gigs is more than just commendable. It is inspirational.

"Just Dropped In" cannot be recommended highly enough whatever your taste in music.

Glowing google review this week
If you fancy a small detour via Burbage, I can highly recommend Vinyl Shakedown Records. Superb selection, all properly graded, and owner is a really nice guy too.
They also have a small area in the back of Fodder & Chisit off Castle Street, Hinckley (highly recommend F&C too as an aside. Great selection of cheeses, meats, beers etc etc).

Setting myself up for disappointment next month by watching epic performances of things they either won't play or will completely butcher

Lifeguard 'Ripped and Torn'

One of the best things I've heard in a long time. Kids from Chicago mashing up PiL, the Fall, Women and too much else to list without it ever sounding too obvious or derivative. Intimidating how they can be this good at that age. 'How to Say Deisar' is insane.

...and I can't stop blasting this very loud all the time.

What kinda stuff is it? Not heard of 'em before.

Really? They were ace, they really were. You've heard of the Fab Four from Liverpool? Well, that was The Pale Fountains!

Two albums, Pacific Street [1983] and ...from across the kitchen table [1985]

First album was acoustic and the second more guitar based.

From the second album:

Saw them a few times. They split and then became Shack, which is a whole different story.

AbergeleNext Time from the first album, which gives you an idea how different the albums are:

And finally a bit of Shack from 1990.

Search for Shack and Waterpistol and go down the rabbit hole!

Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn this monday morning.

Better sound.:)

Someone on you tube has uploaded From the Oasthouse podcasts by Alan Partridge they are brilliant

so the Glastonbury thread showed there's some punx about, so I got bored and made a loud noisy playlist.

• it should work played front to back
• bias towards bands that played my gigs
• a few local bands from the mid 2000s

Nothing on there from before 1999 and a fair bit of current stuff in there to avoid it being total nostalgia.

This is the best possible way for me to find out that my mate’s old band (WPW) are on Spotify!

First time I've found them on there. Have their stuff on bandcamp. Nice bonus of putting this together. I played with them in Leeds once but never managed to get them on a gig in Cov. Had them booked to play with Itch at the Golden Cross but they had to cancel. Hope they're all good. Joe did so much for the DIY scene - wonder if that venue he helped run is still going? (JT Soar) or if he's still doing mastering.

band from Stratford and Notts that put some great punk records out in the mid 2000s and this one is now on Spotify. If you like Minutemen and DC stuff, you're gonna like this.
