i thought that when I heard! That's the consequences of going to war with a country because they won't let you sell their population heroin!
It only applies to people who were born before 1997 so many of them will be knocking on and have families in HK that aren't eligible so 3 million eligible but I don't think the uptake will be anywhere near that.

I think we have a duty. We are certainly not going to consider scuppering trade links with China are we.

More bloody foreigners though. What are frothy mouths going to say?

Given net migration to the UK in 2018 was just over 250k, we could see a dramatic increase in that.

I take it this is a "bait the brexiteers" thread.
You need to grow up. What's happening in Hong Kong is pretty awful. Exceptional circumstances. We should help them and let those who want to come here do so.

It won’t be the brutal Chinese regimes fault it will be the British empire for taking it in the first place

China's PR department are having an absolutely cracking 2020, what else can they fit in to the rest of the year to really top off what we've already had?

Are you worried about being swamped?
Bad news is it is possible to be born before 1997 and not be old. Still, as has already been pointed out earlier on, fruit picking problem solved.

Yes, but if it was open to younger residents I think there'd be a bigger uptake.
Many of those eligible will have family there who can't come to the UK so I'd imagine they wouldn't want to leave them. Many of those eligible will also have the option of going to other countries.
I don't think we'll see anywhere near 3 million.

You look at immigration from any method or reasoning and the majority are young and mobile whether they be students, professionals, illegal immigrants or asylum seekers. Not exclusively a young person’s game but by far the majority. In a nutshell I think you’re right. The numbers who take up won’t be the full number of those eligible. By any stretch.

A bit like the 20k asylum seekers we granted protection to last year. Bit of an increase from that to 3 million, admittedly, but same principle. It's pretty awful in the Lebanon too, Syria, Sudan...

It isn’t the same at all

You're right. We have a negligible number come into this country in normal times, but some people still seem to get upset about that.

No it’s not the same as China are breaching a specific agreement made between the two countries at handover

At least we’ll have someone to pick the fruit and veg now.
Well that should cheer up all the people who are outraged we can't let cheap labour from Europe come and do it.

We wiped our hands with the Hong Kong problem, it's only right they should be allowed to try and settle here if they have a connection. If we gave up Gibralta, would we turn them away?
