My view is that with this radical extreme form of Islamism, those believers who carry out such terrible acts actually believe they will go to a 'better place' as a reward. IMO the best punishment for such extreme mass shootings is to lock them up for rest of their lives in basic facilities, with no access to books, Internet, tv or activities and let them simply reflect on what they did and stew in their own juices. They should be questioned and analysed at infinite depth to scientifically find out and learn fully what made them do it and if they were influenced by 3rd parties.
Death penalty is somewhat an escape for him and streaming it live online with make him a martyr and simply help fuel more radical, extreme Islamic crimes and attacks on Americans.

My point was distraught, angry relatives (or politicans)should not be anywhere near determining sentencing. Victim family statements give them an important voice and Judges normally take this into account.
