Whatever happened to Theo Walcott and why do all these great young prospects we have end up as nothings?
Michael Owen was the last young exciting player we had, and before him Rooney.
The current squad is just a collection of very ordinary players, with the possible exception of Kane, and he is still unproven at international level.

A lot of them get misused and shuffled around to play in various positions, often the wrong one, they need to specialise in their given role .

Shit squad totally unbalanced. 6 full/wing backs and only 5 midfielders. What's the formation going to be? It's going to be playing players out of position they play in for their clubs. To not take Shelvey, Lallana or Wiltshire is criminal.

8 years ago we announced a squad with: Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.

Some drop off in talent. The only one of our players the strongest nations would take now is Kane

I'm quite happy with the squad, a lot of the players cover a number of positions well like Walker as a centre back, Young, Delph, Dier and Alexander Arnold both being able to play in midfield and at the back. Lallana's the player I'd like to have seen in but you tend to get a player or two who has to pull out so he might get in as one of the backups anyway.

I wasn’t saying they did well even though they did get knocked out by a strong German side who put 4 past Argentina before losing to Spain in the semis. I was pointing out the level of player has drastically fallen - perhaps this may work in our favour though with less expectation

I like Welback. Arsene must rate him or he wouldn’t have signed him for Aresnal.

I think with fewer superstar names comes less of a burden to shoehorn them all in or guarantee places regardless. Now Rooney's gone as arguably the last of that lot I prefer the look of the setup. Could all still go to shit of course, I mean it's England whatever they do.

you always get some passengers in a world cup squad - I would focus on the 1st 15 , and not those who wont play
Remember Rickie lambert made the squad last time round!

Good is not good enough, you need to be great to win anything.
Look at the great players we've had before; Shilton in goal, Lineker up front and Gascoigne and Platt in midfield - and even with them we couldn't win anything.

Tunisia - Win but think they could be harder to beat for us and Belgium than some are making out.
Panama - We should win by one or two.
Belgium - If the above happens the result is irrelevant and probably will be for Belgium too. Neither will have a preference of who they play next so hopefully we’ll see both teams go for it risk free and it ends up being an good open game.

Poland/Columbia/Japan - They are an upgrade on Panama but around Tunisia’s level now so if we did make it through the group I can’t see us losing to any of them.

Brazil/Germany - This is where we’re probably going to come unstuck. In all likelihood they’ll win easily by 2 or 3. Along with France they’ve been some way ahead of every other team in the world recently. However both of these sides couldn’t score against us not so long ago and we did test/worry their defence a few times. If anything we looked the most likely to score. Tournament football is different but you never know.

In theory we only need to play above what’s expected once to progress to the final weekend.

I love the this player is versatile rubbish what does that matter there are 20 outfield player so 1 and 1 cover for every position.

Because more than one player can be unavailable at any time, plus it allows more scope to change how you play.

I think team unity plays a massive part. in 1990 and 96 we looked a complete unit, everyone knew their roles and we were a knats cock to getting to the final on both occasions. You don't necessarily need world beaters to be successful as long as you have a disciplined talented side with no personal agendas.

Portugal to an extent too. They’re not “that good” and played some terrible football but were well organised and got the job done.

I remember bobby robson saying after Italia 90 there’s no secret formula to doing well in world cups and euros, you just need to stay in the tournament. No champagne football or 6-0 wins required.

There always an exception to every rule. Greece winning the Euros was a one-off, unlikely ever to be repeated, like Leicester winning the Premier League.
Generally speaking, the more great (not good) players you have the more likely you are to win the World Cup. Because great players perform well on the big stage and in big moments.
Good teamwork usually only takes you so far, as teams like Japan South Korea and Australia have found out.

Panama are at the same level as Slovenia. Not terrible or pushovers by any means and worthy of their place but would lose most games they play against the better teams. As I said Tunisia are far better than most make out. I know the FIFA rankings don’t mean much (Argentina somehow are 5th and Holland are still in the top 20) but for what it’s worth they’re the highest ranked African side by some way. We should still beat them though.

Portugal winning the 2016 Euros was a shock, in the old format, they’d have been KO’d in the group. You have Greece won it in 2004, and also have Denmark in ‘92. Also, Wales made it to the semi-finals, and a few more ‘shocks’, are as followed; Costa Rica getting to the 1/4ers last time, Turkey and South Korea as semi-finalists in 2002, and I’m sure there’s a few more examples that don’t immediately spring to mind. Given our record since 2006, just getting to the quarter finals would be a successful campaign. Whilst we’d have a punching chance against Brazil/Germany, I wouldn’t back us against them personally.

We’re not a team that is capable of winning the World Cup, not even close. The last two world cups have been utter disasters, 2014 was the only WC we failed to win a single game... We got knocked out to Iceland in the Euros!

A successful campaign for us is getting to the quarter finals, we’ve got a young team that needs developing at international tournaments. Stones, Alli, Kane, Sterling, Oxlade, Dier, Walker, Rose (and more), are all young players with limited experience at international tournaments. We’ve got a lot of potential, and hopefully, we can challenge in 2022.

I don’t think Southgate can win, labelled the FA lackey but made some brave decisions in this team. Everyone has been shouting out for youth to play and when he does it they moan. Typical about English support, similar to some of our supporters in that they are not happy unless they are complaining.

We need a squad which can grow together and Southgate knows these guys and trusts them.

I do think he's made mistakes with the squad, but we do still have some good players there. It's not just Kane. Alli is a very good player and we have some talent in Rashford, Walker and Rose.

I do think we should have taken Wilshere though. I think that's a big error on the manager's part.

That’s one I agree with him on, I would have taken shelvey. Wiltshire hasn’t played well, couldn’t get in the Bournemouth squad, struggling to play constantly for arsenal but expects to play for England? Doesn’t stack up to me. Shelvey was the most inform English player but clearly they don’t like his approach. The issue with the squad is that it’s quite one dimentional, we are clearly looking for the midfield to hold up play and support the back three to let wing backs bomb on but if that’s going to get found out we have no plan B.
