Confirmed Signing Stephen Mfuni - LCB + LB

Just saying “we’ve got Frank Onyeka ohhh Yirenkyi in the middle” scans.

343 feels like we’d get overrun. I don’t know feel like we’re missing something at CM but agree 5ATB seems sensible.
We're missing something in every single position group on the pitch so that's a wash.

Leeds played a newly promoted 3-4-3 perfectly last season because they had two of the quickest players in the entire league supporting Calvert-Lewin. Rudoni was the slowest player on the pitch vs Hull outside of the two goalkeepers. And that's not hyperbole you can see it on Fotmob lol. Rudoni was slower than Grimes, Thomas, Amenda and Ajayi.

You need defenders who can pass for this. Da silva can pass and twice broke likes to Rudoni in first 15mins yesterday. Thomas cannot pass. Amenda can but his passing channels are restricted playing on left.
Which is why we are talking about being able to do it it more with Mfuni

The narrower “Robins Box” he used in league 1 might work. No wingers though. But Rudoni and maybe Hamer as the two 10s. Wingbacks would need to work hard.

Yes although he is left back cover in all likelihood where our passing is pretty good. Question should be how good is Pinnock’s passing as he is likely to play. I don’t know!

I think against Man City I’d go 541 with the wingers cos let’s face it that’s how we’ll be pinned back most of the game anyway. Would like to see 3421 or 532 or 343 in other games though.

Mfuni isn't coming to us to be understudy to JDS.

JDS has been great for us and has constantly silenced his critics, but if we're to make a real go of it this season we will need a little more. Mfuni is only 18 and without much 1st team experience, but he will grow with us this season. Can play both LB and CB.

Took this bit from where Manchester City announced his loan to us

The England youth international has been with City since Under-9s, and throughout every age group has showcased eye-catching passing, strong defensive attributes and also a desire to drive up the pitch when in possession.

Aged 15, Mfuni broke into City’s Under-18s squad in 2023/24. One of his standout moments saw the versatile left-footed centre-back score in City’s 4-0 2024 FA Youth Cup final triumph over Leeds United at the Etihad.

I wouldn’t object to that, although one problem is that Mudryk has reportedly said that he prefers Leeds to us. That’s a bit worrying, if true, as I haven’t heard about any other very recent links to another LW, although I’m sure the club will have others in mind.

I have just read that, although the player does apparently still prefer Leeds, his club is unsure whether that is the right move for him, as they are concerned that he won’t get enough minutes under Daniel Farke. Perhaps there is still hope for us, although other clubs remain interested.

I wonder how, if he did come, we would fit him in once given an opportunity to gain match fitness and sharpness. Surely, if he can get back to his best, he would be a starter for us? My only concern would be if that came at EMC’s expense. Would we shift EMC to a different role, such as 10 (maybe playing with two but I’m really not sure about that), as a second striker or as a false nine?

MVE has got to improve his decision making and positional play. His pace got him out of some poor decisions in the championship but this is another level and I’ve yet to see him use his pace constructively.

I’d like my two fastest players to be the one at the top of the pitch on the last defenders shoulder and the deepest (covering) defender.

Will be interesting to see where Mfuni is slotted in.

CCFC slowest top speeds vs Hull:
Rudoni - 29.5kph
Awoniyi - 29.7kph
Grimes - 30.4kph
Top speed in a football match is basically meaningless. It can take you 50m+ to reach top sprint speed and most players won’t make a sprint of that length. If you’re a quicker player but only sprint 20-30m at a time you’ll be “slower”.

Hamer deeper for me next to Onyeka.

as if he currently has the fitness to have ti track back as a cdm
He only managed 70 minutes before gassing for us before he left.

This season would be less tracking and more sitting as we are going to be on the backdoor, a lot.

Hamer has that vision to break the lines from deep that we lack.

A lad I manage watches the Citeh age groups regularly, he says that Mfuni was head and shoulders (metaphorically & literally) above everyone coming through the ranks.

Way better ter than Hardwood-Bellis apparently.
