Started a couple of jogs last week and now been nominated a couple of times for this 5k thing so gives me an incentive to do it.

Haven’t ran 5k in about 3 years so be interesting to see how I get on considering I’ve been drinking far too much.

Well bugger me. Decided as I’m now working from home I need to get up and go for a run in the morning. Did just under a mile in about 7 and a half mins and was blowing out my arse. Wind didn’t help, struggled with my breathing.

I did a nice canal side run this morning, however I slightly miscalculated the distance/pace, so I made it back for my first conference call of the day at 8am with literally a minute to spare. Thank God it wasn’t a video call!

I find one of the main things that keeps me motivated is finding new routes. Even around the local area I find new areas to try or slight deviations of previous runs, or even mixing elements of previous ones. Helps stop it becoming monotonous. I used the website RoutePlanner - I’ve found loads of paths/trails I never would have known existed until otherwise, and I can plan a route to an exact mileage.

Did the interclub virtual relays yesterday. 2miles in 13:53. Absolutely gutted with that. I entered last minute so didn’t have time to rest or prep properly.
Ran down to my start line as a warm up super slow, only half a mile but I was blowing after that. I’d like to think I could knock 45-60 seconds off that if I prepped properly.

You'd be surprised how much it takes to knock off 45-60secs.... That's 20-30secs a mile.

13:53 for 2 miles is approx 21:40/5km pace, so probably about right for you.... I'd even say its very good if your 5km is around, was it 22:20..?

If you knock as much as 20secs/mile off that pace you're looking at down around
20:30/5km pace.

Something you find with running (in fact a lot of sports)..... Just because you get fitter, it doesn't necessarily feel any easier to push to your limit... That limit may be far better than what you could do before, but it's still equally painful...

Yep was explaining that to my lad! Absolutely bang on. It doesn’t feel easier

Ran a very disappointing 20:21 on the Bedworth Parkrun course this morning...

Ok it wasn't race conditions, had to do a lot of weaving off the path, I've been training twice a day since the lockdown with little rest, so wasn't fresh, but very disappointing.

Did start a little too fast and it told on the last lap. Put it down to a bad day, work hard and try again in a couple of weeks.

I feel I can run sub 22 under race/parkrun conditions. So over 3/5ths distance I should and can run that bit quicker.

I know where my fitness is at the moment and I was blowing after my very short warm up. So it just wasn’t my day.

My aim is to be sub 20/5km within a couple of years. So I know that my pb of a few weeks ago is already less than I’m capable of.

It’s in there, I just need the right day and I’ll smash it. Let’s not forget my pb prior to 22.20 was 23.5something. Set a matter of months before.

Believe and you shall achieve.

I was not in any way suggesting you should be satisfied, as you obviously weren't happy with it...

Just advising a little caution about expecting your min/mile times to tumble by massive amounts by dropping down from 3 miles to 2 miles....

But it looks like you're making huge progress.... I seem to be going the other way!

Went out for a run today. Literally after 5 minutes my old problem of hip, and lower back pain stopped me. I walked for a few minutes, then started running again. The pain returned straight away.
I saw my doctor a while ago about it, and they recommended core exercises and stretching?
Has anyone else had issues like this, and if so how did you overcome it?

Slower and build it up

I would go and see a specialist sports/running physio when it comes to sporting activities.

Happy to recommend if it helps....

2 zapain and 1 naproxen about an hour before I do any road/park runs help me :nailbiting: I normally do treadmill running at the gym though. I've 2 collapsed discs and a dodgy left knee(the knee was done road running years ago) so that why I have plenty of pills on tap. Surprisingly though the road running doesn't seem to hurt my back.

Can’t help I’m afraid, but the only thing I’d echo from above is take your time and build up slowly again.

Did an early morning 10k in 39:45 after 2 rest days. My right calf gets a bit tight after a few days of continuous running, but much better today which is pleasing. Now to enjoy the sun for the rest of the day and repeat tomorrow.

Have exactly the same problem but no answer I'm afraid. Last time I tried running the day after I trapped my sciatic nerve again and think it may have been the impact from the running as I could feel it jarring with every step. With things the way they are at the moment I'm not pushing it in case it goes again and I end up practically immobile again. Just going for wallks and a bit of time on the cross-trainer/rowing machine.

So all I can suggest is do a small amount each time and build up.

Cheers for all the replies. I only started again because the gyms are closed. I usually stick to the cross trainer which is less stressful on the body. I think I'll dig my bike out instead.

Once lock down is over could try a chiropractor, I saw one and helped sort out pain I had in hip, lower back. He also got me foam rolling, planking and one leg squatting to help with the issue

5th run in the couch to 5k only walked one one part and ran home slowly getting there

I’ll finish the last week and maybe just start my own routes again

Anyone wear a calf compression sleeve type thing either during or after their run? If so, are they any good? Do they work? My right calf tends to get a bit tight after a run, so was thinking about trying one out. Any advice from anyone?

I’m a bit basic when it comes to running, just whack on a Cov top, pair of shorts, my runners and a pair of gloves no matter what the weather is like. I actually bumped into another Cov fan down here (Crawley, hence the username) on a run, we were both in our Cov shirts, and now we go to some of the local away games together. It’s a small world. That, or the Sky Blues are massive and have loads of fans everywhere.

Allegedly no scientific proof they work at all but the mind is a powerful player in these things and so I wear mine every time

I had some for exactly the same reason. They had no effect for me so just sit with my running gear unused. The tight calf worked it self out with a bit of physio and ignorance.

Never really ran before. Started this week with short runs and just did my first 5k yesterday. Didn’t time it. Around 40 minutes at a guess. Absolutely killed me.

Never saw the appeal of it but feel like I might get into it.

"pound for pound" in terms of cardio health it will give you the best workout and progression of all the traditional exercise methods. (swimming/cycling/Cross trainer/etc)

The payoff to that is its hard (compared to things like using a cross trainer, bike, etc) and can be hard on the body.
