After the weekend, I now make that 13 non shoot-out penalties faced in a row without saving in all competitions, the last one being Ben Wilson away at Albion all the way back in April 2022

Huddersfield (H) – April 2022 - Wilson

Wrexham (H) FA Cup – Jan 2023 - Moore

Blackpool (A) – March 2023 - Wilson

Preston (A) – November 2023 - Wilson

Leicester (H) – January 2024 - Collins

Hull (H) – April 2024 - Collins

Luton (H) – October 2024 - Dovin

Ipswich (H) FA Cup – February 2025 - Dovin

Derby (A) - August 2025 - Rushworth

Watford (H) – October 2025 - Rushworth

Derby (H) – April 2026 - Rushworth

Brighton (H) – September 2026 - Rushworth

Sunderland (H) – October 2026 - Rushworth

It hasn't harmed us too much thankfully, but it really is a rotten record

Since we got promoted to the Championship, one penalty against us has been unsuccessful. Ben Wilson saving against West Brom in a dead rubber (it did preserve us a point, though).

It's been disproportionate levels of success.

Also, until Casimero missed for Manchester United in a shoot-out, in the same time period, both Gillingham and Luton beat us in shoot outs with 100% success rates.

Feel like we haven't missed many in recent years either. Haji slipped away at Southampton. Did Godden miss one in the 3-3 with Watford? Brad Collins saved a late Gyokeres penalty at Barnsley. Is that it since we were promoted from League 1? Cba to think as far back as League 1 & 2.

Been watching closely Rushworths misses. He's always dived the wrong way. Yesterday he moved anticipated before le fee kicked it. I think it's just a matter of him sticking to one direction at point of kick (timing) rather than trying to always guess read..he moves to early and doesn't go right way.

If that even makes sense! Lol

Anyway I'm sure goal keeping coach is working and analysing this closely. It could literally be the difference between staying up or going down. The margins are so fine.

All good penalty takers like Harry Kane will change where they're going to put it to keep all goalkeepers guessing.

Torp missed one a couple of years back. Maybe Cardiff at home.

Seems like he scored that one. I was sure he missed one around that time.

Godden, Wright, Torp and Simms have all missed for us in recent seasons.

Yeah he def scored his pen against Cardiff (Lampard's first game) but I think he has missed one. Can't think who it was against.

The Torp miss was in a 2-1 win vs Hull
Good shout, completely forgot that. I guess we have missed a few. Spread around different players.

In fairness, there was not one penalty in the Luton shootout where I thought either keeper should have saved that

Until Dabo stepped up it was an absolutely perfect example from both sides of how to handle a high stakes shoot out

Ah yeh I remember the Simms one. Don't remember Torp missing one.
Against Luton.

He tried to time striking the ball with the bit in his song that goes 'TORP!'

We still won, though, and he hasn't tried that since.

Actually, didn't Gyokeres miss two for us?

One noted above against Collins and Barnsley, then another against Sheffield United away?

Seem to remember it would have put us ahead, but we ended up losing quite convincingly.

Gyokeres missed one at Bramall Lane on Boxing Day, the game O'Hare did his ACL

I've never got why keepers aren't told to watch the attackers feet as they run up. You can pretty accurately guess where the ball will be going as the foot approaches the ball in the final stride and that still gives you a decent amount of time to attempt to save it and you're far more likely to dive the right way. If the player puts it right in the corner they'll probably going to score, but they've had to hit a good, well placed penalty to do it.

Choosing a side and sticking to it doesn't seem like a particularly professional, top level tactic to me. It's the keepr equivalent of 'hit and hope'.
