Observations from Saturday (10 Viewers)

Sat near the city dug out so heard lots of "coaching"

1. Guest of a Yeovil guy, and delighted with how friendly he and all his friends were towards us.
2. Surprised at the amount of angry shouting at young Daniels by thorn. Way over the top in my opinion and not great for the lads confidence. What happened to an arm round young players shoulders to encourage them? Which is what carsley did at full time.
3. Same for hussey by thorn and shaw. He must hate having to play on the dugout side.
4. Bellowing at Barton to move across to the left to mark one of their taller guys at a Yeovil free kick.. Shows the absence of a proper captain on the pitch, and/or a lack of preparation for the opposition? (Barton was marking one of their taller players in the middle....)
5. Oggy shouting at Cody telling him where he should make his run. WTF ????
6. The bunch of Yeovil supporters screaming at the 4th official that we had 3 people in the Technical area, not noticing that Yeovil had 3 in theirs too. our host pointed that out to them.
7. The continual tailing off of the sky blue song after "we will never lose"
8. The huge amount of angry shouting and gesturing that thorn does. No calmness at all.
9. Thorn and shaw looking just as angry after the game whilst inspecting the damage to their vehicles in the car park.

All in all a good day out, but the game was an anti climax really.. A view shared by the Yeovil lads too. Also noticeable was the general good humour of their fans, with hardly any bad language used in their support of their team or recommendations to the ref !

Possible 'Spit roasting' going on in the changing rooms prior to the game may explain the performance of 1 or 2.

Maybe the youngsters get things wrong more often (though I'm not saying shouting is the right or wrong way to correct it). I think it's quite a common football set up for managers to shout (think of Sir Alex Ferguson's "hairdryer") while one of the coaches plays the arm-round-the-shoulder supporting role. The coach can do it as he won't be responsible for benching the lad next week. Managers often want to keep some distance, but coaches can be more matey with the players.

Got no problem with shouting directions to players......... if however it is constant at a particular player through out a game then that seems to me to imply either the player is in the wrong position, not up to the job or that the coaches or managers message/plan has not been clearly expressed in the first place or the wrong decision made by manager/coach.

If it is angry constant shouting at one or two players in particular then I am not sure what that actually achieves. The message is likely to be lost in the anger for starters, People speak with less clarity when angry and you have to ask with 5 decent subs why a change is not made if the player isnt doing the right things. I think as a coach you would also need to ask why the message in training isnt translated to match performance and that is not always down to the player. (Sir Alex does not use the "hair dryer" on the touchline .... it is used in the changing room where it can be used in a more focused way). If the norm is angry shouting at players then to me that smacks of short comings in the coaching staff.

The SAF hairdryer point was more to illustrate that some managers do shout. I think a good manager should know their players well enough to know whether each individual will respond better to praise or criticism. I can't say if Thorn is right or wrong here because I don't know the whether the players involved will respond better to a verbal kick-up the backside or words of encouragement. But I do agree OSB that you would surely get diminishing returns from continual shouting (or compound problems if he has mis-read what the player reacts to).

No one is vilifying him but his employment as manager will more than likely end up being detrimental to the club long-term. To me, it is essential we go up this season else we are in serious trouble.
