All these people wanting Biamou to come in off the bench ...
Are you wanting him to come in to help defend a lead, or are you hoping he'll come in and score the winning goal?
If you are hoping for the latter, good luck!
If it's even and we need a winner but is likely to go to penalties, Ponticelli would be a better choice. Do you want Biamou taking a penalty?

You surely wouldn’t put the pressure of a penalty on Ponticelli, he is a young kid ffs. What if the lad missed.

Mate I had a groomsman do for my own wedding the day we came back to the Ricoh. I turned up late and everyone understood. Though I was the groom!

I get the impression he’d be fine TBH. Seems mentally strong.

I'm confident we would win the final at Wembley with 40k of us there!
Tonight is the tough one. We are a much better team than them. We just need to play our game and the win will come. The weather and pitch should play into our hands.
Just hoping we turn up as a team and not have one of those inconsistent displays.
With so much at stake surely all 11 players will turn up and and provide McNulty with enough chances to kill the game off? Surely!

And a handful of games. When he didn’t get off the mark in his first few games he got slated. If he missed the morons would destroy him.

Two huge stats to overturn to get to Wembley and and another to win promotion itself

Not won at meadow lane since a 3-0 win in 1963, failing in the last 8 visits since that day.

All sides in the EFL starting the play offs away this season have progressed to the play off final

6th place finish in L2 is statistically the worst place to go on to gain promotion over the last 10 seasons. Only one side has achieved it.

Me I’m pretty happy and looking forward to getting the lad from school to go to Nottingham but if people are given some stats to mull over it may just stop the Trent from being full of bodies tonight and the usual meltdown on here.

We failed to win at Wembley in 104 years then won the FA Cup there

McNulty is a big player for the game.

Looking at the 4 teams in the play offs he’s by far and away the best striker on show and we need to play to it.

Only when he plays with Biamou up top with him ;-)

He's a professional footballer, and a striker to boot. I'll bet he's desperate to be involved.

If we were going there needing a win to stay up then I'd feel way more confident than I do now

Thats the way a Coventry City supporter is socialised... well used to last day wins to stay in a league, well used to last chance saloon away games- all doable. But a game to actually achieve something? No clue how that works, only seen it once in 43 years!

exactly, so the "facts to overturn" meant bugger all

I am at a loss as to why these "facts" have any bearing at all on a one-off football match.

Is McNulty going to be shitting himself thinking "Jesus we had a terrible game here in 1981 when Brian Kilcline was playing for them, we've got no chance tonight"

Is Michael Doyle going to be quivering in his boots because we finished 6th?

Its utterly irrelevant- if we lose it'll be because they were better/luckier/tougher than us, not because the ghosts of the 1964 Notts County side were somehow acting as a 12th man for them

Yup. I remember Strachan being quizzed on the Villa Park 'hoodoo' when we'd never won there and his answer was to the effect of; 'there's no hoodoo, we'll win there when we're good enough to'.

Completely agree. The best goal scorers are those that accept they will miss chances, but are able to then put that behind them the next time they get a chance. Ponticelli seems to be that type. I don't think he worries about missed chances and I would be more confident about him converting a penalty than nearly all our other players.

I'd say he's the perfect player to take a penalty.

I don't recall too many young players being frozen by nerves and missing- I do remember Waddle, Southgate, Pearce, Dion Dublin looking terrified and missing though. And in 1988 I also remember being there in person as David Phillips (who won at Wembley 12 months before) said he was 'too nervous' to take a penalty at Reading in the "Simod Cup" semi final, and seeing Dave Bennett looking paralysed and missing, and seeing a very young David Smith stepping up and smashing one in as if he was playing on the local park.

Youth can be a great antidote to overthinking & nerves in football. No fear, a healthy arrogance.

Left work early, had an ale at my local and I’m now on the way.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt this way before a game as a spectator, it’s certainly the most significant game I’ve experienced and the nerves are kicking in.

However, I’ve said it a few times on this thread and I still maintain the same view; we’re the superior team and we’ll beat them, as long as play football and do not get dragged to their standard.

3-0 City.

We are not the superior team, after 46 games they finished a place above us.
That said I hope we can win and make us happy but without a win at Wembley it counts for nothing. Tonight is a stepping stone.

Yep, if we are being literal they finished above us. However, we are still the better team, as long as we play football as I said. It’s been the same issue all season, too many times we’ve played nowhere near our potential.

Last Friday we were the better team but failed to capitalise. Tonight in better conditions we should fare better, even without Davies. As long as JCH doesn’t play obviously.

For a large part of the season we had a very defensive minded approach - we scored fewer goals than anyone.

Without McNulty and the introduction of Bayliss we would have struggled to be mid table. Player for player there is not much difference between the teams at all.

Your first paragraph is literally my point.

I agree re Bayliss and McNulty, but the same can be said for a lot of sides; most teams have two or three better players who elevate the team. I also think players like Willis, Davies (not relevant this leg granted), Doyle and to some extent Kelly and Grimmer are better than their equivalents for differing reasons.

JCH should also be better but unfortunately he’s not this season.:emoji_fire:

I agree with you there.

But, historical facts can play a psychological role in performance I think and the best example in football of this is, penalty shootout. England and Spain (well, used to) have a penalty shootout hoodoo hanging over them. Meanwhile, Germany and Italy were renowned for winning them.

The psychology of an athlete can’t be underestimated!

In this instance, however, it’s a clean slate, it’s completely new territory for us.

Yeah, and if we took away Accrington’s Kee, or Wycombe’s Akinfenwa neither would have made automatics...

We’ve been missing our best player for most of the season, Jodi Jones. All it takes is a glance at our record against the top 9 or so with and without him to demonstrate that. Whilst we didn’t see mich of Andreu, he’d have been a main player for us too.

The squad is a strong one, hence we’ve been able to cope with the losses we have and still finished 6th, only 9pts off automatics.
