The police's job is to maintain order, and as much as people will be curious and want maximum transparency, the police will release as much or as little information as they deem necessary.

Personally I'd think saying nothing about ethnicity at all is the best thing to do.
From now on they have to say something as no comment will be taken as saying it's non white anyway.

But that doesn't fit in with the narrative a certain part of society (let's call them racists) want to believe - that these incidents are only done by Muslims or darker skin tones.

So when an incident like this happens that doesn't fit into what they believe the only way they can process it is that it's all a big cover up and the perpetrator was who they thought it was all along.

Tbf he has a point, because when they do say that, it will inevitably lead to more of the same online problem. I know they wanted to quell speculation, but it does have consequences for the future and I think it would have been better saying nothing and let the race baiters hang themselves as usual. The difficulty they had was in the geography that makes the statement understandable being close to Southport. Had it been anywhere else, eg one of the London parades, I don't think they'd have made the same statement.
