Clubs in the top two divisions buy young players for their potential. That's why they are cheaper, because they're not the finished article
I have to smile when I hear people say 'if he's good enough he's old enough'
That's true if you are talking about raw pace and talent but it overlooks the experience that is required to survive against the very best opponents who will use every trick in the book to intimidate and overpower them
Phil Boden is possibly the best young prospect around but even then he's being very carefully managed while he gains experience, usually coming on when games are already won

Kyle Walker still gets caught out at times and considering the price tag on John Stones he aint pulling up any trees so lets reserve judgement and if McCallum does go lets just rejoice in having a few wonga in the kitty

This is correct, full backs are asked to tuck in these days. It doesn’t look natural leaving the wingers unmarked but that’s how the position has evolved

Absolutely! The old days of wingers getting to the by line and crossing for a forward to finish is relatively rare these days. Most wingers now prefer to cut in and shoot or cross early. I guess the stats gurus have worked out that you are less likely to concede by having a full back tucked in, than by staying out wide man marking the winger.

Glad to see fans cottoning on that we are in a cutthroat business and it is about more than growing talent for our own team. We need the revenue.

But also because of the inflated prices paid by the top clubs, we could then bring in more than one with the money and still chuck something into the coffers. Remember Rose, who is much admired, cost us nowt. It is about being smart and having good players for our level.

Like Bayliss, we would be getting serious money for a player who has potential, but who actually on a week in week out basis is not one of our best performers and not necessarily contributing a lot to a promotion drive. For that we need players who can deliver today.

We have three options with SISU - a fire sale (they won't), to be run down (they might - see Oldham), or to be ring fenced and left to run on a basis of a modest loss (current set up I guess). The sale of players like McCallum and Bayliss justifies the current model and at least gives Robins a chance. SISU will never be the fourth option - sugar daddies - as we know

Perhaps McCallum can be one of those we actually get a decent fee for in the future. Only play him when necessary and let his valuation soar based on hearsay and reputation alone. Man City and Man Utd slug it out in a £10m starting point bidding war (we get Leroy Sane in exchange).

McCallum has great potential reminds me of a young Ashley Cole when he was coming through we will get good money for McCallum when we do cash in I feel, also has that long throw asset to his game we need to be smart with this one when the time comes for sure.

Could McCallum and Brandon Mason play together on left hand side or are they just competing for left back ?

Good player, often teams have tried to target him and attack down his side but on each occasion he grew into the game and nullified the threat. He seems to have his head screwed on, and is making good progress suggesting he is working hard. As for positional sense. Yes, the majority of teams now get the full back to tuck in. Often leaving the winger in acres of space, however as soon as the ball gets shifted to that winger they are closed down.

They're both left backs. I'm really unsure where this idea that a left back just converts to a left winger comes from. Gareth Bale is a one off

But they're more likely to fit in there than a striker which is how we've done it in the past. Many of the skills required overlap, especially in the modern game when full backs are constantly being asked to overlap. Plus they'll also have the ability to help out covering or be able to interchange and possibly cause confusion for defenders on who they should be covering.

Not saying they're all capable of it, but if you've not got any wingers available they're the next logical choice IMO

Hahaha we will see if he ever moves for a monumental fee, somebody might take a chance on him coming good or if they need a left back to fill out the under 23 squad. Robins is hardly going to say he can’t defend and is talentless is he wether he rates him or not he will build him up to shift on.

McCallum hasn’t shown enough going forward to play out wide. Would never play a fullback as a winger in a 4-3-3 anyways, only possible for one to transition further forward in a 4-4-2 imo.

Biggest prospect at the club without question.

Big
Strong
Quick
Reads the game well
Also has that long throw at such a young age could well end up in the premiership later on we need to be smart when it
Comes to cashing in here,he reminds me
Of a young Ashley Cole

I didn’t as unfortunately I had to work, as you have asked I guess that you think he had a good game

Just had a quick look at the very brief highlights and he features heavily they easily got the ball in from the right for the goal as he was way off his man and was out of position for the very good save by the keeper. Did he have the shot for Bakayoko goal?

Yeah, had the shot for Baka's goal. Was very good in the second half when we changed formation and he was playing more as a winger. Like most modern full backs he's a little susceptible defensively, the formation in the second half definitely suits him better. We have to remember that he was playing for Herne Bay less than 18 months ago and has only had just over a year of professional training - by his age a lot of players at this level have been in academy ranks of pro clubs for the best part of 10 years.

McCallum, Dabo, o'hare and Kelly looked immense last night. For such a young lad McCallum looks like a real find, always available and wants to drive us forward.
It's clear why championship and premier league clubs are watching him, but hopefully he will remember the likes of George Thomas and Tom Baylis who jumped ship too soon and appear to have stagnated as a result (I know its still early days for Baylis) getting game time in a team that has genuine promotion ambitions should be more important at his age, than earning a quick buck.

I’d imagine McCallum is being played to try and raise his value for a sale in January

I’d imagine McCallum is being played because he took his chance well when Mason was out and then Mason failed a fitness test yesterday anyway. But no you’re probably right, it must be some kind of conspiracy.

And if he’s as bad as some people say (you previously for instance) wouldn’t playing him regularly highlight this and lower his value?

I guess because I am far from his biggest fan and it seems he had a good second half last night so that now makes him a future England player.
