How much will we have to spend in the summer if we are promoted?
And what would it get us?
And would Lampard go in for any of his ex players? Abraham, Tarkowski, Chilwell, Harry Wilson for example

IF and not getting too far ahead, should we get into the Prem, I wouldn’t want us to spend huge amounts! The likelihood of us staying up no matter what we spend are still slim, so enjoy the ride, gain experience and keep the books healthy for a rainy day rather than piss all of our money on big wages.

looking at sunderland last seasons itll be £100m ish, i doubt we'd sell any of our starters tho (fingers crossed anyway)

I can see 3 interesting options amongst the many.

One is to barely spend a penny (in PL terms), expect to come down, and have a secure future. All those years of Sisu have scarred me, so this is probably my preferred option.

On the other hand, King could spaff £50m - £100m on the hope of staying up. Expensive risk, and we've been there before (in relative terms).

Third choice is Doug plays the game and tries to sell up and make a profit. Probably the long-term plan anyway. But if he sold to some Saudi fund, or some American egomaniac, I don't think I'd enjoy it. There's something about the struggle, about being the underdog, about trying to beat the odds that really appeals to me.

Lots of other options in amongst it, but those are the 3 that stand out to me.

As much as I would want us to stay up - assuming of course that we get there - I am in the camp of those who only want to see sensible expenditure. Let's secure the financial future of the club first, while ensuring that we have enough in the kitty to give us a good shot of promotion in the season following relegation.

I never again want to see us overspending, going into administration, suffering points deductions and sinking rapidly down the league ladder.

Just like Luton.

Fuck this noise I’ve waited quarter of a century to see us back where we belong I hope we grab it with both hands and all of Doug’s cash.

We will need circa 8-10 players would expect, should we go up - so well in excess of £100m
Which may raise eyebrows but we’re spent around £55m in transfers since 23/24 from £46m in sales.

King has said that he wants to not only get promoted, but to stay there too so there’s good enough reason to expect funds will be made available.

We had points deductions mostly because of Sisu wheezes not buying too many players.

They did spend a lot, by the standards of the day, in trying to keep us in the PL and it went horribly wrong when we were relegated. I think that's when the shenanigans started.

And we got bought out and the debt basically wiped. I honestly think people worry too much about it. At this level there’s always a buyer. As long as we aren’t signing stupid contracts like £90k/wk for the next four years just to get players through the door I wouldn’t worry too much personally. Parachutes exist for a reason and we should be able to sell most of what we buy even if for a loss.

I just think not trying to stay up is even riskier long term.

If we go up - and there is a long long way to go, I hope we are sensible. Spend £50m on a couple of really good youngish players. Maybe add 1 relatively cheap old head. Take the cash. Take the parachutes. Do it all again and you have a chance of consolidating

Yeah, just like Luton.

This go back down and we'll go straight back up has echos of the last few seasons before we got relegated from the Prem originally.

There was an ever increasing number of people who thought going down and bouncing straight back up would be great for the club as it would create a winning mentality. Look how that worked out.

If we go up we need to try and stay up. At the same time as supporters we need to not get on peoples backs if its not going well.

I can see Bling getting in some investment start of the season and if we are doing well relinquishing control and selling completely to someone.

The last thing we need is to take a gamble that threatens our future again.

We have the backbone of a side good enough to get promotion from the Championship. We should keep these players and replace those seen as second or third choice. We have players that deserve their shot in the Prem.

Some start and others become 2nd or 3rd choice. If we didn't stay up we would be in a great position to go back up and try again. Strengthen again and keep improving. I don't want us to do a Leicester and mortgage the Prem money in advance to pay the wages of players that are not good enough and can't sell because they are on a big wage after relegation.

There's a massive difference in going down with a squad good enough to go back up and going down in a mess having to sell the players you have. When we got relegated from the Prem before our club was in a mess from trying to stay there. Just like Leicester are now. No money and players on massive wages they can't move on.

Yes we need to strengthen but not risk everything doing so.

The key is how you do it. Those that have double relegated have bought expensive dross that they can’t offload when the gamble fails. If you buy sensibly and don’t max everything out it’s perfectly possible to make it work.

Any idea how many (would) qualify for a free ST? I expect you have to take that into account, despite the TV money and other ST's/Matchday tickets that don't qualify.

Looking at what promoted teams have spent over the last two seasons it averages out at £95 million per team. You will of course see an increase on top of this in wages on the players signed and also an increase in wages for players retained. Even these huge figures, don't guarantee survival.

The problems come when you overspend and go straight back down, the fire sale to off load wages means you sell at big losses. Also don't forget wages, as well as increases for those who go up with us. So not nearly as much as some people are thinking, I'm afraid. It'll be very hard to be competitive.

It’s the wage bill that kills you just as much as the transfer fees, if not more. Norwich never really spent much in their 2 recent promotions but spent all the Sky money on wages.

Being a bit in the dark here, but IF we get promotion, when does any money come our way? Immediately or over a period?

We’d then lose those players who were able to make the step up from the Championship to the PL, as well as those signed for the PL.

I’m sure the aim within the club would be to get there and stay there for at least a few seasons.

Looking at the Premier players with expiring contracts we could get a good squad on a free.

John Stones
Mark Guehi
Harry Wilson
Andy Robertson
Adama Traore
Nick Pope
Ross Barkley
Callum wilson

All on free's.

And then spend £10m on Hamer to return.

Don't need to break the bank

The reason you've waited quarter of a century is because of reckless spending by a previous regime.
We see it happen every so often with other clubs but it soon gets forgotten. Sunderland ended up with us in League 1 and luckily won the playoffs last season. Leicester have had the biggest fall winning the Prem and now look like going into freefall. Sheffield United wasted their money and don't have much of a squad to compete with the newly relegated sides next season.
