How much will we spend in the summer? (13 Viewers)

We’d then lose those players who were able to make the step up from the Championship to the PL, as well as those signed for the PL.

I’m sure the aim within the club would be to get there and stay there for at least a few seasons.
If we lost them we would get good money for them. We wouldn't be stuck with players not good enough on massive wages.

Looking at the Premier players with expiring contracts we could get a good squad on a free.

John Stones
Mark Guehi
Harry Wilson
Andy Robertson
Adama Traore
Nick Pope
Ross Barkley
Callum wilson

All on free's.

And then spend £10m on Hamer to return.

Don't need to break the bank

Some have waited 25 years to see it. Many saw it first time round and saw financial mismanagement and an attitude to risk that meant we had to go to Northampton etc and have only just got our own stadium. Now us not the time to spaff millions on bang average journeymen.

That’s got nothing to do with our current situation and we’re hardly going to be overpaying for journeymen.

Luckily Lampard and the club will have more ambition than those wanting to following the Luton model.

Silly comparison.
No-ones saying don't spend, but it needs to be sensible.
And Luton did what they did for a very specific reason that doesn't apply to us.

Exactly. Lots of good free agents out there. We dont need to spend more than £20m to be competitive.

Well I wasn't thinking that low!
I've seen nothing from King to suggest he'll start spending wildly, and one thing I trust King with is the purse strings.

Any idea how many (would) qualify for a free ST? I expect you have to take that into account, despite the TV money and other ST's/Matchday tickets that don't qualify.
5000 we're sold first time round, and I think it was another 500 the following season. Assuming that we do go up and that 90% have renewed on the Premier package, that would be 4950 entitled to a free ticket.

Nobody has said do the same as Luton. Just don't do the same as Leicester or similar.

We see it happen every so often with other clubs but it soon gets forgotten. Sunderland ended up with us in League 1 and luckily won the playoffs last season. Leicester have had the biggest fall winning the Prem and now look like going into freefall. Sheffield United wasted their money and don't have much of a squad to compete with the newly relegated sides next season.

Bolton is another, finished 6th and were in Europe. But the continual reckless spending of a rich financial backers money eventually caught up with them and they plummeted. Almost out of existence.

The Luton thing is all hindsight. Their journeymen actually gave it a better shot in the PL than the teams that were promoted with them, and at the start of last season most posters on here were tipping them as the most likeliest to go back up. It is quite funny how badly its subsequently turned out for them though.

Barnsley, Bolton, Wigan, Reading, Blackpool, Huddersfield and Luton....all currently League One and all have been in The Premier since we were relegated. The Championship is littered with even more.

So the idea that the Premier League is the promise land and just full of milk and honey is a bit misguided.

Surely we have to improve the overall structure of the club if promotion was gained. We have a ok training facility and a less than ideal academy base. I would imagine a limited recruiting dept and a stadium that needs investment to expand the income streams in amd out of season.

It would be a gamble to just look at the 1st team squad and think that's the only improvement we need. I know the squad needs help but i honestly believe the structure and foundation of the club needs most of the investment.

This is not to say we cant whistle and walk at the same time, but Doug could really change the way this club moves forward for the next few decades, if he gets it right. We need a cat 1 academy, bigger scouting system and 1st team facilities that attract the premier standard of player. Without that foundation, i would fear the club would be not in a position to attract more investors and players further down the line. My feeling is Doug will give it a crack in the prem and enjoy seeing the vision he had come true. If he sells and walks away i dont think 1 fan would begrudge him that right.

I agree, no one had said anything about signing journey men either and I can't imagine it's something the club would consider, so no idea why the OP suggested it.
