Thing is, he followed the rules. He was presented with a single yellow and lifted 96m earlier for that corner.

Why it wasn't a double yellow, or even a red, only the race director will know. I certainly don't think a single yellow covered the situation adequately. Had it been a double yellow, he'd have had to abandon the lap.

Seems to me, it's yet another massive cock up, brought to you by the FIA.

Good point, I just watched back the second to last lap when the safety car was called in, and you’re right, the lights never went off, at least when the safety car was shown on the coverage.

Both BBC and Sky reported the safety car was “redeployed”, be interesting to see what happened but again a poor show.

All in all a bit of a farce. Again it's a race where a lot of the overtakes are battery-related. Still can't accept that as F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport the qualifying times are 4 seconds slower than last year - Kimi wouldn't have got out of Q1 last year with his pole time.
Also Kimi complaining it's not his fault he exceeded track limits because the car was broken - well if you can't keep the car on track it should be retired for safety reasons (for the drivers on track with him)

It correctly followed its rule this time, so fair enough for that, but the manner of how the race ended and the incorrect communication was awful.

But surely the Race Director has the discretion to say no lapped cars can overtake, would that have been a better option here? Or maybe they just need the rule to be less rigid, and leave it at the discretion of the Race Director as to how satisfied he is that the lapped cars are well out of the way.

Bit of a disappointing end to the race, there was lots of confusion as to why the race didn’t restart, but overall a brilliant weekend. Would recommend highly to anyone who has never been.
