It's this obsession with positive cricket. Let's just call it hit or miss cricket.
Test matches have 5 days for a reason.
England desperately need a grinder in the top order to bat around. Look how India struggle when Pujara isn't there.

Sometimes you get the feeling England don't care about overseas series and it's all about big money successful home series.
Takes the proverbial when West Indies are showing England how to bat at Test level.

Maybe central contracts are the problem. Playing players to get maximum return on investment and also stop them hitting the 20/20 circuit full time.

Still a lot comes down to the county championship calender. Playing too many games in conditions suited to bowling.
We'll see it again this summer. First 4 or 5 games there will be a load of games finishing in 3 days with barely 700 runs scored. Lot of innings under the 150 run mark or lasting less than 50 overs.

There is a shortage of decent openers in county cricket even the bears have had to try to retrain two batsman.

Who would you go for? Really struggling atm and I imagine Roy or Hales will get a go soon purely down to 1 day form.

I’d stick with Burns, they’ve got to decide do they want someone to dig in or blast from the start?

Digging in wise there aren’t many openers that stand out. Roy usually bats down the order when he occasionally plays red ball.

Suppose It depends if they want to try and convert a middle order youngster like Joe Clarke, Dan Lawrence, Tom Abell etc

Still believe Hildreth should have been given a go in the middle order at some point but that won’t happen now and he’ll be filed under the ‘David Sales’ category.

I’d go-

Burns and Bairstow
Root
Youngster
Stokes
Buttler
Foakes
Ali
Curran or Woakes
Broad
Anderson

Trouble is then we have the Root at 3 debate all over again.

He needs to get his head down and bat there until a better option becomes available or for the time being you get an experienced middle order player ie Hildreth and tell him to bat there or you put Denly there as he bats there for Kent but tbh 1,2,3 should all really be interchangeable

It’s never happen but I’d like to see Woakes given a go as technically he’s the best around the set up at present.

Definitely, I'd have him open with burns next test barring a decent knock from denly in the 2nd innings.

Australia release Will Pucovski from squad for mental health reasons

Sad story from Aus, clearly a really talented lad but with some serious health issues.

Well those 2 Broad wickets in the over were a false start of hope.
Can see the Windies having a lead of 140+ here and England not even making them bat twice!

Poor day yet again!

We talked about this on the warks thread through the summer. Let's be honest they were very poor beginning of the season but tbf worked hard and improved. Still may need a specialist in div 1 but none about.
Plenty of young hitting talent emerging in the short formats but batting cupboard empty atm for longer forms.
Youngsters learning plenty of innovative stuff etc. for short forms but not enough about batting in the longer form. Players making a decent living just doing the 20/20 eg pollock at warks

Denly already being written off. He's nearly out every ball. Why on earth did we pick him?
You really think Hameed would be worse?

Denley a poor pick for me. Is part time spin enough to justify a Test spot?

Apart from that two silly dismissals already

As I speak England are effectively 6 for 9. Really pathetic!
For those glass half full types, we've just avoided an innings defeat.
But West Indies might only have to bat one over to win.

They should be able to resign like in Chess, by knocking Root over.

Root reckons we were basically outskilled.
Got to wonder whether he's strong enough to do the job. Impose himself on some of the players.
Too high a % of batsmen getting themselves out. Lack of application and some just don't have the technique to battle it out on tricky wickets.
Batting was often poor in Sri Lanka and hasn't improved. Has been obvious from day one of series that runs were going to have to be ground out and fought for.
Going to get a good bet on early for Aussies to win 1st Test probably against similar batting line up as we've used here. Got to be honest can see this side taking their eye of the ball and messing up against Ireland atm.

Heard a stat yesterday that Broad has had 98 dropped catches off his bowling.

Changes are needed the Buttler experiment doesn’t work often enough

Nothing wrong with the concept but the base has to be right.
Coming in at 180 for 4 rather than than 40 for 4 is an obvious advantage.
Even though Bairstow got a few runs still trying to hit his way out of trouble rather than bat his way out.
Too Much of a one day mindset that you can hit your way out of trouble - that 2 big overs will make things better. Some of these dismissals have been absolutely one day dismissals.
Maybe need to lengthen the tail as this batting line up too used to having the tail bale them out.

Root isn’t a good enough leader.
Too many players know they’re undroppable, selfish and haven’t got the patience/attitude to defend!

England are in big bother this summer in the red ball game unless the top order step up and start knuckling down!

The two tests has been pretty pathetic. For all the good performances shown by the likes of Bairstow, Buttler, Stokes and Moeen, they average 37, 34, 32 and 30 respectively. Stokes averaging 24 since he came back from his ban. Along with two openers who haven't established themselves as regular runmakers, it's hardly surprising England's top and middle order are not churning out competitive scores often enough, especially with Root not having been in great form himself. Depressingly, it seems that there is nobody better waiting in the wings. I just think that a different coach could get more from these very talented players.

Now the series is over I’d get Ollie Pope and Joe Clarke over and in the side, free test to see if they can provide another option and if one gets a score it’ll be a kick up the backside for one of the regulars.

Yep I agree Buttler would be the first out his record is shocking and out would also go Curran for a proper bowler in Woakes and not as I heard yesterday Wood

I hope they haven’t given up on hameed as well.

The one change I would make now is ramprakash out and Thorpe in.

Likes of Ali, Buttler, Stokes and Bairstow think a 30 ball 50 rather than a 200 ball century is the better achievement.
Stokes has shown occasionally he has what it takes to bat long but most of the time these 4 in particular seem to be having their own private competition rather than doing what the team needs.
Problem still remains there are more than a few batsmen in county cricket that can bat like them but seemingly none that can bat with a Test match mentality.
Central contracts are maybe having a negative effect as players do think they are undroppable and also how many 4 day games are some of these batsmen actually playing every summer.
Not a new problem bowlers and tailenders have been bailing out the batsmen for a while now.

wood a knee jerk reaction. Just throw in a fast bowler as that's what the WIndies have.
