Id say as it’s just another example of Labour front bench incompetence

This person seems a rather odious chap but if he’s got a British passport I guess that’s that.

It’s a fitting end to the year for Starmer. Big up his release and his part in it. Then the ostrich egg lands on his head and he bids a hasty retreat.

How Abd El-Fattah was granted citizenship says a lot about the state. He’s never lived in the UK and yet the government specifically lobbied the Egyptian government to ‘return’ him to Britain. Frankly, he should be denaturalised at a bare minimum and the country needs to have a hard think about what it means to be British citizen.

British citizenship has become an administrative process. It needs to tied to a civic national identity as it is in France and the USA.

And then we can follow the USA and deport people who’ve gone though the process

This is nothing to do with anything other than Starmer bigging himself and his legal abilities up and then looking like a total fool - it sums up his inability to lead this country.

are there actually many people on here that think he's doing a good job or defend his record as PM? because from what I've seen, if you were hoping folks would rush to defend him or give Jenrick a kicking so you could get into it with them, you were always going to be disappointed.

If only we could enjoy the uncomplicated nationalist politics and sense of social cohesion enjoyed by the Americans and the French.

Well I’m surprised anyone would celebrate his coming to the uk but I think Shemima Begum should not have had her citizenship revoked so I’m hardly demanding that for a pound shop racist like this moron

Sums up the state of our politicians.

You've got Conservative MPs who were campaigning for his release now outraged. You've got Farage & Reform, who had Lucy Connolly up on stage as a hero despite her being found guilty of inciting racial hatred, reporting historic tweets to the police and Starmer looking like a dear in the headlights.

We're governed by incompetents.

We’re all incompetents chief
Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try harder but I think this is at the root of our current issues
We expect far more from others than we do from ourselves
Let’s be better

The United States hands out citizenship to anyone who happens to be born there. I’m not sure how their system is meant to be better (or less “administrative”) than ours?

You seem to be editing my posts for some reason.

Many have in the uk especially celebrities and the government until it became embarrassing

If I said I wanted more black people to die on here I think I’d be in for a tough time

Still don't think you've explained why you're amazed. I'm not amazed that a politician(s) would switch their stance to score points or scramble to seem to be on the right side of history, so it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot to talk about.

You’d also have to massively shrink state for that to happen.

Broadly speaking, I’m a fan of generous tax allowances for families. The cost of everything and a generation of cultural malignment of parenthood has been prohibitive for young people starting families.

The advice to people of my generation to defer having kids ‘until 30’ is turning out to be disaster for many people.

In fairness, he doesn’t laugh his own expense and he went down the typical Labour cabinet minister excuse of ‘bad advice’.

Personally, my view is that people will always try to reduce their tax burden and only apologise when they caught. Though that’s hardly an original view to have.

We have that - it’s called inheritance tax where we take money earned by people during life to bring into state coffers to pay for things like education for those who are yet to earn.

Taking wealth from those alive to redistribute arbitrarily to younger people creates a society of entitlement despite effort and stifles drive and ambition.

I don’t need to explain how weird thinking mad that is.

Three things I’d like to see on that note:

Universal childcare up to 2 children
Universal free school breakfast and lunch
Paternity leave entitlement increased up to 3 months

Family friendly policies with multiple benefits for each.
