Got to be honest “people can’t access Twitter” really isn’t working as a bad point

For some reason I’m getting the alerts today in the Netherlands. Not sure if it’s cos I’m on a UK mobile data contract. All been fairly painless but I’m not a Twitter user and do look clearly like an adult.

If you’re using your UK phone data in NL, you’ll look like you’re in the UK still.

Must have just not used it until today cos I didn’t get it yesterday. Have done Reddit and Bluesky with the facial verification and I think (assuming the do actually follow their privacy policy) it’s a reasonable compromise for this. No stored data. Not perfect for younger people, and no idea how accurate/foolable but a reasonable first stab at what a privacy aware age gate can look like.

It's where the lines are drawn and who draws them that's important. Where's the safety net against govt censorship that already occurs in the likes of China & Russia?

Currently they’re drawn by the US govt. I’d rather it was ours.

That's the thing - is Tiktok (for example) really that much better off under US control than Chinese? US media companies just as likely to be pushing propaganda/bias (either left or right). Again i'd rather it wasn't govt control at all but some sort of broad based non-politcal authority (if such a thing is possible in this day and age).

This is interesting. The replies to people who have posted this on socials are insane, ranging from ‘show me the data’ which is clearly sourced in the article to outright denial because ‘it’s in The Guardian’.

You might hope that people rioting under the banner of concern for women’s safety, or supporting the rioters cause, would be concerned about this but apparently not.

Two in five arrested for last summer’s UK riots had been reported for domestic abuse

Police data indicates overlaps between public violent disorder and domestic violence and abuse

That's not really a surprise. Most of us who are a bit right leaning like me, sit behind our laptops or phones shaking our head and tutting a bit. It's a special kind of c**t that actively goes out to start a war with the people in the hotels or against the authorities. Sympathy for a few passers by who got caught up in the moment having been fed propaganda, but I'm not really shocked to see those having a go at the police are already in the criminal network.

Should have asked how many were charged and how many convicted of domestic abuse etc. Bet that figure is even more damning of the problem.

Guess not. Something slightly bizzare about them accusing anyone who protests their actions as being bussed in paid protesters while they present themselves as concerned locals but are actually known criminals who have travelled to cause trouble.

Makes sense I suppose when you look at that football alliance or whatever they're called. Essentially hooligans who can't find anyone to fight at games anymore.

It's a job listing on the job centre website for a role at a privately owned muslim community centre.

It's a faith based mediator for family disputes, divorces etc same as there are ecclesiastical courts, beth dins, rehit maryada etc (although I'm not sure if rehit maryada has formal rulings)

But because the job centre website is a .gov site its been decided its clearly a public sector role working for Manchester Council and paid for by the taxpayers.

Ok thanks for the explanation. I have to say though, I don't think this is quite the gotcha you are making it out to be, to be honest. The fact these things exist in the UK is quite disturbing.

They've existed in the UK for what, 40 or 50 years? Why are they an issue now, they have zero legal powers.

Is it just sharia mediators that are disturbing or are you putting mediators of other religions under that banner as well?

Guy just seemed to be too middle class and British and trusting that the police would do the right thing. It wouldn’t kill them to go “whoops fucked up here” same as a few of the Palestine placards. Not sure what they gain from giving it the PGMOL

Would you like to stop any religious guidance or just the Muslim ones? I believe Jews have similar. And it’s in the same realm as psychic hotlines and stuff. I have a guy I ask about Warhammer rules when I’m confused.

As long as they’re not encouraging breaking UK law then I don’t see the issue.

There's been a recorded 40,000 victims of FGM in the UK now. That's supposed to be an illegal practice and have no standing in the UK either. Some of you are hopelessly naive when it comes to Islam, and as soon as it gets mentioned flip straight on to other religions.

I mean, if we are comparing Sharia courts to Warhammer rules and psychic hotlines then there really is no hope anyway.

Is there evidence Sharia Courts are routinely recommending FGM?

Yeah I’m saying it’s a bunch of people asking for advice on made up rules. It’s the same thing. If my warhammer guy was recommending I decapitate my opponent then I think the police would have grounds to be concerned. That’s the difference. Is that happening? I’ve not seen any cases but I’m not looking.

I've got no idea what goes on in there, and I don't think anyone does. If I humour your comment, I guess the point is that no one in the UK thinks Warhammer rules trump those of British law. You can't say the same for Islam and Sharia law, and some of the barbaric practices within the religion. Islam comes first, and whatever is qualified within that, be right or wrong.

I get the joke about Farage and his band of fanatics getting the wrong end of the stick very often, the same way that there are always jokes about a serious topic like this, because it is hard for some people to talk about these things without shitting themselves. I strongly stand by the concept that these courts, legally binding or not, have absolutely zero honest space in a functioning British society. Neither does FGM of course.
