In truth they’ve been after pubs for years, not all pubs obviously’‘ just the small independent wet led type,
punitive stealth taxes, excessive business rates, the grossly unfair beer tax escalator (which automatically increased duty on beer by 2% above inflation every year ) that only applies to pubs, allowing supermarkets to use alcohol as a loss leader with no minimum pricing, the smoking ban,
All these things combined helped to contribUte to the closure of 14,000 British pubs between 2000 and 2018.

If/when we are allowed to open on the 12th April ( outside only ) we will have been forcibly closed for 33 weeks of the 55 weeks since the onset of the first lockdown on the 23.3.2020.
During the 22 weeks we have been permitted to open our doors we have been required to conform with rigid restrictions and regulations not required or implemented in any other sector of commerce or retail.
We have had to set up our own Track & Trace system.
Put in place our own and comply with our own risk assessment.
Put in place a table service only operation.
Police groups to make sure who is with who and not exceeding limits on numbers in groups.
Remove/mothball seating, erect screen, supply necessary PPE and cleaning materials and sanitizers.
Make sure everyone is wearing a face mask when walking within the pub.
Keep TV / Music volume to a minimum.

Basically in order to open your doors you have to transform your pub into everything a pub shouldn’t be, sterile, unwelcoming, cold, tiresome etc.

Then to help out they cut VAT to 5% but only on food.
Then they introduce the ‘Eat out to help Out’ scheme.
Then they say you can only open if you serve food
 Do you see a trend happening here.

Before long going out for a drink will entail a choice between Wetherspoons, Brewers Fayre, Harvester etc.
Most of us hear you my friend.

Sure, but there’s a big difference between ‘free market’ economic policies being awful for independent pub owners, and this claim that the Tories have some deliberate targeted campaign to kill off all pubs through public health measures. Who would want to do that? And on what grounds?
A cultural shift went on somewhere guess it was the 80's

There was either a New virtual hub for the community , later I think.
Expansion of home ownership seems to have brought with its more natural conservatism and personal responsiblliy.

I've got nothing but sympathy for you trying to keep it together in the most crazy trading environment in modern history. And I don't doubt that government policy has for years given big businesses a leg-up over small/independent competitors. I just don't see any evidence that this particular COVID policy is a targeted measure to take out the entire pub industry. If it is, why would they do that?

Because they look on us as crime ridden sleazy dens of iniquity, meeting places of the criminal classes, havens for dealers and customers of drugs and the black economy.
Nobody would deny these pubs exist, In my hometown I know of 2 such pubs out of a total of 40ish so that’s 2% and it would probably be fair to roll that out nationwide.

They look at rising levels of alcoholism and all the social problems associated with it, they look at the cost of treating alcohol dependentcy and the multitude of other health issues linked to it.
They look at our Town and City centres being turned into war zones every weekend and the huge cost of policing these areas, recent lockdowns will have only strengthened their resolve in this area.

There are very real problems linked to alcohol consumption and only a fool would say otherwise but the government are doing what they always do and just going after the easiest and most obvious targets = Pubs.
The antisocial behaviour on our streets is almost entirely caused by young people who have spent the evening with friends drinking ‘god knows what’ unchecked , that they’ve chipped In a fiver each and bought from Asda,
they then emerge from the suburbs and and hit the town centres like a deranged legless army hellbent on trouble..
Its strange how the less pubs we have, the more alcohol related problems we have.
putting a stop to cheap supermarket alcohol would have a huge and overnight beneficial effect on this country but instead they will wipe out a much loved, much needed and very British way of life.

I would much rather them shut bookies and casinos before anything else. Money for nothing

so among all the other gigs that have been cancelled recently I had an e-mail today saying that Idles in Millennium square Leeds has been cancelled.
The significance being that this was supposed to be in July and outdoors. Maybe we won't be getting back to normal as quickly as we think.
Be surprised if there aren't some fairly major restrictions in place for the start of next season.

I think it's down to misconception over the vaccine rollout. The extra 5 million coming from India would have accelerated things beyond what was initially planned for. All the delay of them does is mean we go back to the original timing. Now if the EU start playing silly buggers and try to barge the queue, it's perhaps a different story.

Not heard anything about the one I've got in Berlin but no way it's going ahead and even if it does we won't be allowed to travel.
Not sure where I'll stand on getting my flight money back. A re you getting reimbursed?

The tickets they offered us to transfer to a rearranged date in February or refund so we just took the refund. Flights are still open but they were only £50 return. I'm going to leave them, if we can't travel get the refund and if we can just book a hotel for a last minute weekend.

Looking at today's numbers it still remains approximately 50/50. We'll have under 2 million left in the UK from the top 9 groups after today, after which it'll just be second jabs probably until May.
I’ve got 31 days left in which to receive my 2nd jab within the 12 week recommended timeframe.
People who have had the 1st jab after me at the same surgery have been given their 2nd appointment before leaving, I didn’t ‘so I presume this is a system they put in place after my 1st jab.
Thought I’d better call on Monday ‘as didn’t want to be forgotten’ was told not to call them as they will call me.
I‘m sure all will be fine.

I'm not expecting to be offered one till June now, missus will probably be July. Getting quite a lot of 'vaccine envy' of the forum elders here

I am surprised when I see things like Parklife selling over 100k tickets, I know it is in September but there is a lot that could happen before then.

I’d swap my vaccine for your youth 😂
I’m only 52 but ongoing medicinal injections apparently severely compromise my immune system, I felt guilty going early and was thinking about refusing it until later as I usually feel fine, Mrs wasn‘t having that and stressed they know best.

Unfortunately I suffered no ill side effects other than a sore arm for a couple of days, I say unfortunately because from what I hear no side effects points to a weak immune system.

Yep....I've got vaccine envy too....and I'm 49 and mid- diagnosis.
Getting a bit paranoid that the supply chain is gonna get fucked up creating longer delays too.

Don’t suppose your school have been in touch with local surgeries?? Might be worth the question?

I saw that a medical centre doing it in Ireland got their ability to give jabs revoked. No point trying to get up the queue I’ll just wait my turn.

It will get less likely we have delays in the future as more jabs are approved and in the case of Novavax we’re making it in the UK. Doesn’t help right now though.

They're clearly not chucking money at developing what I would think are relatively expensive and complex apps in the knowledge there is zero chance of them ever using them.

After a year of no concerts how many non-vaccinated people would refuse to go to a show rather than take a test?
5K at a concert in Barcelona yesterday. On the day test included in ticket price, test result sent to a phone app with a negative test required for entry.

Wonder if seeing things like this in other countries while events aren't allowed in this country will soften some peoples stance on 'vaccine passports'?
