Which makes sense- I don't think anyone can blame any government for not knowing what will happen months down the line, the issue is that they didn't act with common sense in the first place to get us to this position.

In the UK- I would bet that if you took any 100 people from any walk of life and armed them with the same facts and knowledge as the govt had & asked them what to do, we would have done what we did do a week earlier and not pissed around with social science & experiments.

You really believe that would make a difference?

Ultimately, the only test will be if and how the NHS gets overwhelmed, won't it.

(Although just had a phone call about my blood pressure review, asking me to take readings. I reckon it might be quite high just atm...)

Hadn't realized how shocking the Spanish numbers in terms of health workers affected - around 5400 out of the near 40,000 cases

It’s also occurred to me that this would be a lot easier to manage if more people had adapted to change and relevant systems were then already more robust. Take food deliveries, who (and I’m not including older people who are not comfortable with tech or don’t have laptops) is still visiting a supermarket each week?

If majority of population were doing food deliveries and there were more drivers we could have transitioned to lock down far more easily. Same for remote working, at least 50% of office jobs can be done from home but it was the reluctance of employers to let people do it they slowed adoption.

One thing is for sure this virus is going to have a lasting impact on how society functions.

I wish you were right, but I think if it’s only a few weeks people will bounce back to where they were. After all I want to shop online and can’t right now so I can’t imagine it’s enticing many people over who don’t want to shop online

Thats not true, the only other country that tried to do nothing and increase herd immunity was the Netherlands, they also realised that it was impossible nonsense and backed down & locked down, only they did it a while before we did. No other country on the planet did what we did. Then again, USA seems to be hell bent on making our initial approach look cautious and measured- you'd fear for whats heading their way.

Having said that its done now, I just hope that when this passes some people are asked some very fucking difficult questions as to what they were doing.

Well I agree but this isn’t going to blow over in a few weeks so there will be some forced adaption. Will help for when this inevitably happens again one day.

Our approach is no different other than timing and that is not actually different either when you relate to deaths. Our policy as of today is identical to Germany, What makes you think less people will ultimately contract this virus outside the uk within Europe?

Yes but honestly I think the likes of ROS think it will just vanish in countries that introduced measures 7 days earlier

Definetly, the longer this goes on the more unstable society will become.

We are nowhere near that line at the moment.

We have bought more time as our first cases actually were similar - the one thing we could have done is refused entry to anyone fro Italy and China and detained those here for a two week period -.unless countries ban travel its constantly going to recycle itself

Society isn't going to collapse FFS....

If this virus landed 30 years ago, there would be soooo much less panic than today (albeit medical science has evolved).

Social media (this site included) is not good for peoples health/mindset with so many 'experts' around. The truth is, no one on here knows what's going to happen. Computer simulations, theories, expert analysis...the truth is it could all be wrong.

This is serious. Everyone needs to calm the fuck down, stay the fuck indoors and eventually the world will be able to come out of hibernation. There'll be lessons to be learnt - politically, socially, scientifically and economically. This is a life changing event.

But society isn't going to collapse.

I think people have been plugged into a society that has an economic game at the centre of it for people not to be bored, then unplugging people from this 'matrix' will be a problem.

When fear subsides, thats when there will be issues. People will go through stages of emotions, and when indignance, anger & frustration overtake concern for own safety, then we'll see big problems.

Not sure about 30 yrs ago, my dad loves telling me about when he was a kid and the mass panic about Polio, but I do agree that society is undoubtedly... 'softer' nowadays. And thats not a bad thing, just saying, its true.

I don't think anyone knows with any reasonable accuracy, but I take some comfort from this. Somewhere in this thread someone posted a chart of most of the pandemics that have hit us throughout recent history. According to timelines and dates most of them seemed to run their course over a period of 1 to 2 or 3 years without any of the medical interventions we are capable of today. Spanish flu lasted about 3 years in 3 distinct waves and then either weakened to the level of normal flu or disappeared. I read a good article recently which stated that viruses weaken over time due to something I don't understand which to put simply means they don't want to kill their hosts as it inevitably brings about their demise. Complete rubbish probably. My thoughts are that it will hit the world in waves over the next couple of years but each time we will be smarter and quicker to act, and bit by bit we will develop mitigating treatments and / or a vaccine.
