To be honest I'm still not entirely sure about the 80% thing they announced for salaried employees.

It seems to only apply if you still have a job. ie: your employer can claim back 80% of your salary. But if they decide they don't want to pay the 20% it seems like you're in the same situation as someone unemployed.

We are good at social media when it means winning elections, it appears we’re not so hot at social media when it comes to saving thousands of lives.

Boris Johnson, the man who shut down Gregg's without even buying anything.

(That works because I am saying he is a fat git and would normally eat everything in the store)

The whole keyworker thing could be applied to pretty much most people if they wanted it to, surely?

This 'essential worker thing' is going to really cause these stubborn frauds who make a living out of people's misery to question themselves. Sportsdirect being a case in point, but plenty of people who have pointless jobs resulting from unfettered capitalism will try and stick up for themselves and justify their parasitic existence.

I mean. I work in the pharmaceutical industry (in IT) and I’ve been classed as a key worker, but work is work. And arguably no job is pointless. I couldn’t give a shit what industry I work in.

Can anyone explain the 80% wages to a dummy like me? Is it net or gross? Is it 80% of a maximum 2500 eg 2000 or can 2500 be 80% eg of 3125. Also if you earnt 45k and normalky come out around 2709 would you still get 2500 take home?

There are 327 million people in the US. They’ve only tested 313,000 ...and so far have 41,000 cases and 520 deaths

And Trump wants to open for business in 15 days..

Agreed, I was just using sportsdirect as a hyperbole. I don't have any problem with sportsdirect being open and in existence in normal circumstances, but they're putting profits before wellbeing when they're clearly not an essential service. Which is why I'm annoyed at such places trying to justify their continued opening.

Not a clue, its not clear on the government site, "HMRC will reimburse 80% of furloughed workers wage costs".
Under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, all UK employers will be able to access support to continue paying part of their employees’ salary for those employees that would otherwise have been laid off during this crisis.

Eligibility
All UK businesses are eligible.

How to access the scheme
You will need to:
  • designate affected employees as ‘furloughed workers,’ and notify your employees of this change - changing the status of employees remains subject to existing employment law and, depending on the employment contract, may be subject to negotiation
  • submit information to HMRC about the employees that have been furloughed and their earnings through a new online portal (HMRC will set out further details on the information required)
HMRC will reimburse 80% of furloughed workers wage costs, up to a cap of £2,500 per month. HMRC are working urgently to set up a system for reimbursement. Existing systems are not set up to facilitate payments to employers.

He's more concerned about the impact on his chances of winning the election than how many people die.

Out here if it has expired they are relaxing the rules and no action will be taken (as long as it expired on or after the date of the lockdown).

I'm not sure if we're key or not as we supply supermarkets wity back of house stuff, but if we are, is our supply chain of metalworkers etc also key as we can't supply without them and where does it end as they'll require their suppliers etc
