Isn’t the point we don’t know yet? And nothing has changed yet anyway. But the gist of what I was getting was if it’s more transmissible we’ll see an increase in hospitalisations regardless of the vaccine or not which could cause issues for the NHS and more deaths etc.

I don’t think anything will be reversed from what we have today but I can see them going back on being allowed in pubs worse case scenario.

Maybe but johnson has shown huge reticence to act so this doesn’t quite fit unless he’s playing a cry wolf game hoping people won’t be to lax and he won’t have to lockdown again. For me the press conference makes no sens e

I think they are still hoping the vaccine will be a get out jail free card. I really hope it’s right. I’ll admit though I did think it would probably be worth delaying being allowed in pubs for a few more weeks. At least until the euros while they get more data.

I can understand why they didn’t though and from what they were saying even in Bolton etc where the new one is knocking about the data isn’t showing increased hospitalisations.

The real issue is the fuck up again of not closing down flights from India quick enough.

Because i really do not see the issue even if we had fucking 40k cases a day, as long as thst doesnt end up on hospitalisations/deaths.

And all the science says, and shows that the vaccine prevents this in 97+% of occasions

It's almost as if they have little confidence in the jab .
As for waiting I've been waiting for a simple examination/biopsy for close to a year, first saw doctor 18 months ago .

I would genuinely be struggling not to tie a rope around my neck if this shit goes on much longer.

The thought of going away with the kids down south in July and going to the ricoh in August has kept me going.

If thats off the table i will really really struggle to cope.

It's quite the opposite, it's places with low vaccine uptake where we're seeing the bigger problems.

I'm the same. We're in the process of turning around hundreds of pieces of work to decide the grades of Year 11 and 13 students and we have had it made pretty clear who will be thrown under the bus if there's appeals or complaints. Even some of my chirpier colleagues are getting snappy and tense, light at the end of the tunnel being taken away would be a bridge too far

Pretty much this

People do seem to be fixated on the headline deaths figures and miss the knock on effects of increased hospitalisations.

One of the most painful bits of that program based at Walsgrave as watching the Consultants try to argue it out over who gets the the very limited theatre space for operations/

I think outside will stay but as a society we're going to have to make a fundamental decision on the long term future of businesses reliant on indoor trade to survive. Covid and its variants are here to stay and we need to choose between whether we accept thousands of Covid deaths each year despite vaccination, or if places such as cinemas and restaurants will need closing permanently.

Once the vaccine rollout is complete (for this year) we will be laughing. Right?
Isn’t that why there is talk of a delay. Not indefinite, but to give us time to complete the rollout. And that’s still based on if the new strain is more transmissible which we don’t know yet. If it turns out to be at the lower end of being more transmissible we will crack on basically. Higher end. Pause unlocking for a bit and push on with vaccinations.

I don't know is the honest answer, until every large country is covered the developed world isn't out of the woods. Modern science is working miracles but politics, economics and self interest are the barriers.

I would invest in the pharma companies whose vaccines are on the verge of getting market approval in the US/UK/EU. Novavax will be imminent here and just agreed an EU deal I think.

I don’t really understand what you mean? Are you saying it’s more likely to be a coverup than it is that people could conceivably contract a disease (that’s so infectious it’s shut the world down) on their commute to an airport in India?

I’m all for a conspiracy theory but you’ve got to do better than that

I think it’s because the more the virus is transmitting through the population the more chance there is of mutation. The more chance there is of mutation the more chance there is that the vaccine becomes less effective.

If everyone was vaccinated I don’t think it’d be an issue because transmission wouldn’t happen mate.

No, I suspect the tests they are giving out in India are shite and aren't doing their jobs properly. Therefore people are being put on planes when they have the virus (knowingly or unknowingly).

Just because someone asks certain questions does not make them a conspiracy theorist. It is a fact that it is happening, but again, the reasons why are up for debate. The only thing I have said which can raise eyebrows on the tinfoil hat front is about the story I read which has now disappeared regarding a flight going to Australia where many passengers arrived with the virus, but they were cleared to fly at the airport beforehand. Something about that is off.

Because any previous assumptions about hospitalisations were based on lockdown + vaccine.

Again, how is it? I even posted the article about the Italy flight which confirmed the same situation.

It does stink and it is dodgy. There's obviously a failure with the tests being used in India at the airport. As I said, I'm not claiming to know why that is or on how many occasions it has been. All I can say is I 100% read a story about the Australia flight and now I can't find any news on it.

49 passengers on India-Hong Kong flight test positive for COVID

As COVID-19 cases rise among passengers, Hong Kong bans all flights from India, Pakistan and the Philippines.
www.aljazeera.com

Two flights from India going to Hong Kong.

From the article:

“But this is why our border testing is leaky,” he added.

Clearly they aren't checking people properly before they leave. Bear in mind we also left the door open for another week.

Re the 21st June I think part of the problem is Boris has over promised. Given not all adults are expected to have been jabbed until the end of July why would you remove all restrictions before then?

In reality I think masks and 1 meter social distancing are here until the government can say we are all vaccinated. The bigger question then is do we need to remain cautious through the winter where it could be expected that infections still rise.

They've under delivered, they'd hinted at vaccinating all adults by the end of May and they're going to miss that by miles

Should've stopped all commercial flights from India as soon as the variant became rife.

Really don't get why there was a few days grace between the announcement and the deadline

I don't think we will back in lockdown again but the 21st June date is surely looking very optimistic now

Also, where's my fucking vaccine? We were doing so well with the over 50s but the over 40s have dragged on

Well they believed they would get the deliveries from.India that I still don’t think have arrived yet and with their big problems now I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see them for months yet.

The biggest mistake and more avoidable was being under cautious about India in general and it appears we’re being under cautious again with variants. It looks like we’re conducting a live trial even if that’s not the intent

I wonder what difference this press conference would have made just before the local elections Most people would probably shrug and say what could Boris do? Lol. Could have managed the border with India better couldn’t he??!!

All the Tories I know will say one of two things whenever anything inconvenient is brought up

‘He’s doing his best’

‘Corbyn would have been worse’

Or my favourite so far, ‘Corbyn would have given all our doses to poor countries’
