There is a core group of about 15-17 that are a good starting point to build towards the 25 man squad.

Exactly this. Lampard talking about players who got us promoted deserving a chance is just accepting that about this many will still be around.

To a point. It's possible to go through a season where more goes against than for, and vice versa, too. Generally you'd expect both good and bad fortune in a season roughly equally, but there's no real reason why there should be.

What's true is people have selective memory, and focus on the bad luck rather than the good.
And also a different standard of judging refs decisions around their team, compared to decisions around the opposition.

There is no doubt that we were denied several stone-wall penalties early in the season, as I'm sure were other teams. Whether VAR would have made a difference is debateable. Players quickly learned if you crashed into a striker in the box and made it look like an accident the ref was unlikely to give it. It did seem as though referees were more likely to give penalties in the second half of the season though, whether this was my imagination, a coincidence or instruction from above I don't know. It would be interesting to compare the statistics.

How is VAR an additional benefit? Almost by definition, VAR decisions are equally likely to go for us or against us.
Players like Sakamoto won't be constantly fouled and the ref missing most of it. Look at how many times EMC got fouled but it went the other way if the ref did anything at all. We didn't target our better opponents with constant fouls like a lot of our opponents did to us.

This is a big reason why players like Ayari can express themselves in the Prem but struggle in the Championship. They're allowed to express themselves on the pitch.

Some fair points, although it seems to me that defenders get away with a huge amount in the Prem too, and VAR is just as likely to go against us with free kicks or (especially) offside decisions.

Of course we will have calls go against us. I didn't say anything different and I didn't mention penalties.

Ipswich will have to totally change the way they play. It's a shame that they had to change managers. Maybe one of the reasons he decided to leave.

Amazing take. I guess the Championship is just a tougher league than the Premier League 🤣

I’m sure we’ll win it at a canter this season with all that time on the ball and ability to express ourselves 🤣 🤣 🤣

It’s a complete myth that players who are gifted can flourish better in the PL. The league is quicker, bigger, more technical.

Looking for at least 60 points anything more is a bonus

Been told by a Ghanaian friend that BTA is the most talked about person in the country right now after his performance. He's become an overnight sensation and they're desperate for him to start against England.
In all my nearly 50 years of going to games I'm struggling to think of another sub who has changed a game so much. They went from totally outplayed to becoming dangerous. If Ayew was even half decent they would have taken the lead well before they did.

Ayew on the left....

Yeah if anything the big difference between championship and prem is that premier league players are top 0.000001% athletes

Ayari was a young man that season, there were signs he had real talent. A lot of loan spells develop players in numerous ways and that is outside of their matchday performances.

Harry Kane had several average loan spells, as did Semenyo (to non-league) and even our own Callum Wilson. There’s loads more examples of great players who didn’t set the world alight on loan.

It’s reductive to say players are protected more and therefore able to express themselves more.

Every PL game I watched last season was very physical with the referee letting loads of fouls go. Sakamoto is not going to be anymore protected than he is now, VAR only checks pens, reds and second yellows.

The premier league is more physical and the games is played at a relentless pace and tempo, much higher than the championship.

It’s a cliche. The only reason the Championship is more physical is because the schedule is more demanding where 3 game weeks are regular, outside of teams playing in Europe, there’s more rest between games.

9 teams being in Europe gives me hope that we’ll do v well next season.

Fixture congestion is real and Championship sides have a brutal, compressed calendar, including the traditional Christmas fixture list, while the Premier League now deliberately restructures its festive period so that no club plays within 60 hours of another match over that period. However, the research I saw on fixture congestion doesn't show players getting MORE physical or aggressive as they tire, it shows the opposite. A study tracking youth players across a congested 7-games-in-7-days tournament found a reduction in defensive technical actions like interceptions and tackles in the final games of the competition, exactly when fatigue was highest. The conclusion was that tired legs make you slower to close players down and engage in duels, not more willing to fly into them.

The Championship doesn't use VAR in any regular league fixture, so reckless or off-the-ball incidents that get caught and retrospectively punished in the PL just never get reviewed in the Championship, Saka was subject to quite a few of those and genuinely i think the PL referee threshold for free kicks is higher.

Not sure if already posted but this highlights reel was posted a couple of days ago. I don’t expect him to be a regular starter but I think he can make a real positive impact throughout the season.

They are just taking the piss, No knowledge of football.

Bloody hell that's one hell of a claim - talk about OTT

Only the first half if I recall but your claim that it's the best sub performance you've seen in 50 years is mental
They were absolutely useless in the 1st half. If you're being truthful for once and saw the 1st half you will know this. Didn't even come close to having a shot on target. Should have been a few goals down by HT.

If Ayew wasn't so slow and useless he would have scored not long after BTA came on when he pit him clean through on goal from just a few yards out. They couldn't get anywhere near him.

I didn't say less physical. What I said is players are better protected. The problem with this is you can't fully celebrate a goal because they can go searching for a reason to disallow it. Most supporters don't seem to like VAR for this reason.

Why would I be lying about seeing the 1st half? My point is more about your claim that it was the best substitute performance you've seen in 50 years - That's ridiculous

VAR doesn’t check every foul. It’s a more physical league with less time on the ball against bigger and stronger players. The idea there’s players who do better in the PL than the Championship is utter nonsense.

Fleming?

How are they better protected? VAR only checks pens, Reds and now second Yellows.

The other reason people don't like VAR is it still gets a lot of decisions wrong.

And the length of time it takes to make decisions and over turn them.
Personally I don’t think VAR should make any decisions. It should always be the Ref, VAR should just provide footage when required.

The problem is most football laws, especially around what is a foul are subjective without a universally correct answer.

I don't think VAR does make decisions, and that is not it's intention. The Ref has ultimate decision making, as happened in France's game against Senegal.

It is subjective because he's talking about ones he's seen - that could be very few examples.

Ever, yes, it's OTT. Solksjaer scored 4 off the bench once.

The use of VAR at the World Cup is far superior to the way it is used in the Premier League. The checks have been done swiftly. The Premier League produces numerous controversies every week and checks can last 4-8 minutes.
