Got a really tricky day tomorrow; we get some really important cancer related results back, after an absolute roller coaster 12 months of diagnosis’ ranging from bad to ok (contextually) to terminal to ok again to bad, so really not even sure what to expect tomorrow.

My other parent has a lifelong nerve deteriorating condition too, which the last 12 months has not been ideal for!

Not much compared to what some others are going through, and generally cope ok, but certainly feeling very distracted tonight.

I don’t think this is a gender specific issue and I think social media pressure is probably more likely now to encourage young vulnerable girls to look at ending life.

I make no secret of the fact I am a functioning alcoholic who can consume vast amounts of booze. Yet certain posters think this is hilarious and frequently try and target me for it. I had one suicide attempt which involved a lot of tablets and booze when young but it wasn’t really very serious and having a stomach pumped in the 80’s ain’t great.

I will say though certain posters - two in particular - will question my sobriety and laugh when I make posts. I don’t actually care but having been to support groups and helping some people in them for a lot it’s self destructive behaviour which is no laughing matter

If someone was like me and did care this imbeciles could actually create consequences they I am sure would not intend

I’ve shared openly on here my mental health struggles and you’ve told me before “go and lie on a therapists couch again” so don’t act holier than thou

Just read this thread back from start to finish and seems like a fair few contributors aren't on here anymore.

Sadly, we all know about Fellatio but wondering about some of the other. Bringbackrattles for instance?

He I’m pretty sure is still around.

He still writes poems on a football site

It is telling that some of the biggest personas on here are often the same ones who are struggling behind the scenes (and it takes courage for them to admit that). Should serve as a reminder to those who want to come on here just to pursue online grudges, laugh at posts, or try to suggest people have drink/drug/personal problems etc. Sometimes a bit of perspective wouldn’t go amiss.

Been quite tough still, mostly with the insomnia. I tried out the melatonin as suggested by a few on here, but along with anything else I've tried, no joy. Waking up at 3-4 am most days now, but bolt awake for a few hours before I feel really tired again around 7-8 am when it's time to go into work.

I'm getting a lot more brain fog and just generally struggling to take new information in or to concentrate for meaningful lengths of time. I was due to play in the British chess championships this week and managed a decent season for my club, but had to withdraw from playing again as it needs brain power I just don't have.

There also doesn't seem to be a particular connection with my mood, as the only thing making me irritable at the moment is the messed up sleeping patterns. Baby is on the way soon which we're both excited about and I'm enjoying the more computer based work in my research project, but given what babies are infamous for with affecting sleep, I'm concerned about how we'll manage.

What about magnesium?!

I got some but think I need to cut the dose as I'm struggling in the mornings.

It’ll be tough no matter what, but you’ll find a way! Hopefully you both have a bit of time off, but giving each other dedicated time to just relax and/or sleep (one of you taking the overnights, one of you taking the mornings etc) has made a huge difference for us. Sounds like you’re already used to the impact of having little/broken sleep, which I certainly wasn’t, but hopefully your baby will be a decent sleeper eventually! There’s no rhyme or reason to it…

I have just started (i.e. yesterday) a quite well reviewed one that contains some magnesium, it was £10 for a few months' supply so I'll see what it does. The only thing that worked for a while was the sedative/anti-depressant prescribed by the GP, but a) that caused other side-effects and b) I got used to the dose after 3-4 months so it stopped working.

It's had a significant effect on my research as I basically can't do lab work any more while either sleep deprived or on that type of medication.

Just a thought but have you had covid? Although as nobody tests these days probably hard to tell. I happened to mention I had 'brain fog', my memory is fucked and really struggle to concentrate on one thing when I was at the hospital with something else and that was the first thing they asked. Said it was really common in people who had had covid, even if they'd had no symptoms.

Unfortunately they have no idea why it happens or anything to help reverse it other than wait it out and hope it goes away.

Covid is my working theory for what's causing these problems as I never had any issues with sleep before I caught it early on. It started out happening a few times a month, then a few times a week, then in the past 12 months, basically every night.

We've been overwhelmed with the generosity from close family in spoiling the future baby rotten with toys, cot, pram etc. It's a dangerous place to be if both parents are sleep deprived though, so we might well need to call in some more favours.

Fingers crossed it clears up for you.

Unfortunately they don't seem to have much answer for things they're seeing in people post-covid and most of the planet seems to have forgotten covid was ever a thing.

World has moved on and there doesn't seem to be much interest or urgency in researching these things or finding a solution.

I just got some from bulk powders, I'd have to check the dosage but they have made a difference I think. I didn't have insomnia though but struggled sometimes.

These new ones are tablets that contain magnesium and a few other things. Looking into them though, the evidence they actually help with deeper sleep is a bit sketchy.

Hope it gets better anyway, as it's really impacted my work and hobbies.

I’m feeling really well at the moment , last year was tough and very stressful . My father in law and my dad passed away within a week of each other , we were dealing with buying and selling a house , had to move in with my parents . The house we are renovating took longer then we thought dealing with various tradesman majority of whom were brilliant but one was an absolute nightmare to deal with to the extent the electrician we had wanted to knock him out . All this was going on whilst we were trying to organise 2 funerals , me and my wife weren’t on the same page as a coupe but we got through it . I’m not ashamed to say I gave up exercising and pretty much turned to drink for a few months , I didn’t realise the crutch it had become . Then a switch flicked started running again , changed eating habits still like a beer but only a few on a Saturday or Sunday rather then every night

Also started boxing along with running which has helped me lose nearly 2 stone . House is nearly finished just waiting on the kitchen to be delivered and fitted , did a lot of the donkey work in the house on my own and that was a nice feeling . my job is great ( I work with kids that have learning disabilities) my wife and daughter are great things are going really well , I know at some point life might bite me on the arse again but at the moment I’m really happy .

Just going on from the lack of sleep topic, my missus has the opposite problem. She's 75 and had a stroke 3 years ago. She is also now developing dementia - she has hallucinations and talks to people that aren't there. I go to bed around 11.15 each night and she stays up to watch some garbage on tv. She'll end up sleeping on the floor, either in the living room or bedroom. She says it's more comfortable for her back pain. Then she will sleep most of the day.
I then care for her all day, i.e. sorting medication, washing and dressing her, sorting meals, washing, cleaning and shopping. I rarely venture far from the house because I worry she'll wander off somewhere, which she did recently.
I can't even get a full night's sleep because she'll wake me at 3 or 4am and ask if I want a coffee!
So, my absolute sympathy goes out to all you guys going through a mental struggle. Believe me, I know what it's like.

Surely anyone who is happy 100% of the time would be a bit of an enigma. Life can be very tough at times and Will rollercoaster through your entire existence . If you’re in a trough , you have to try and believe that sooner or later you will hit a peak again. I’m not talking about Bi polar either just the emotional waves that follow most peoples journey.
