Turner has basically done nothing but write match reports and rehash quotes from press conferences for years. The coverage we get in local and national media is generally appalling. National media is at least understandable because we’re a small fish in a big pond but the lack of any actual insight from the local press is just unbelievably bad.

Hopefully this one actually does his job and tries to source news himself rather than re-hashing club statements.

Tbh local journalism is on it's arse on the whole - it is a dying industry, all the local rags are owned by Reach PLC these days and they just rely on lazy, clickbait journalism

Nothing will change. Reach has ruined local media in this country.

I think it is down to how the provincial newspapers are being run nationally. They all churn out the same click bait garbage and no real journalism takes place. But it says a lot when Wasps were in town and Cov Rugby fans complained about the lack of coverage for Cov Rugby. The Sports editor said he didn’t realise Coventry had another rugby team playing in the top few tiers. Not that the coverage improved once he found out!

Here's top 5 reasons why we hope this fella actually does his job and tries to source news himself rather than re-wording club statements.

It's awful. Even when there is something on the Coventry Live site I want to read, it's just all pop ups and ads covering the content.
All of the local news sites under that umbrella are the same crap.

I do feel for the journalists who actually want to do real journalism and not just re-tweeting what is going on in the area.

Club don’t need the local press like they used too. They can put out and control what they release these days. Gone are the days when a journalist could make a phone call then pop round a players house for a cup of tea and an interview. The local paper used to be a football clubs publicity department.

Yeah exactly. And then you have the likes of Fabrizio Romano who is a mouthpiece for players and agents and can break stories directly from them.

Not remotely his fault

From some of the tweets being posted I suspect it was not his decision and knowing a little about how Reach work would not be at all surprised that if it wasn't his decision the first he knew of it was when someone else took his place.

Reach have been destroying local journalism for a while now. Journalists working for them have to attain a certain quota of clickbait stores - hence the plethora of headlines similar to “Here’s ten things etc” and “You will never guess etc”

But then the public gets what the public wants. Don’t buy or subscribe to newspapers/ magazines/ websites, then you’re going to get bad journalism.

Looks like he has been replaced as the Telegraph's CCFC hack

Somebody in a group chat I'm in says he took voluntary redundancy

My brother worked for the Telegraph for many years in various roles from junior journalist, up to sub-editor and similar senior roles, before moving on.

I gathered that things were never easy, and the almost constant threat of redundancies/job-cuts must be very stressful.

Must be pretty soul destroying to have all your articles put behind a pay wall that I'd imagine barely anyone subscribes to. People used to tweet him giving him shit for also like it was his fault! I imagine the job has become increasingly difficult anyway in recent years due to the fact Doug doesn't like anything to get out. Very difficult for the local paper to get exclusives these days.

Andy Turner was still posting on Saturday and his twitter profile still says was ....
Coventry Telegraph sports writer covering Coventry City FC (Jan 1998-Oct 2026).
News of his departure is thin but it looks true now. 😁

I broke CCFC transfer rumours and news before him via SBT and he just reused what I found a day later! 😂

You’re welcome Andy. All the best for the future!

Alternatively, dont shit all over the City's club and let wasps line your pockets and youd maybe have kept a lot of subscribers. Never read the rag since the day they relegated CCFC news to a column 3 pages in whilst the insects got 2 full back pages. Shit rag, deserves its downfall for being wasps bedfellows. Dont really care if this Dick is any good either as ive zero interest in the shit they regurgitate!

Easy to criticise when you have no idea the constraints someone is under

Covering football for local media must be an impossible job nowadays as others have said
