So correct me if I’m wrong but Hughes would become our highest purchase of all time at 12 mil? I would rather we go for loans then break our sensible transfer policy of the last 5 years.
This is stupid though. Loans are guaranteed to lose you money as you’re paying wages/loan fee with no potential sale in the future. Hughes at 21 years old is almost a guaranteed profit at the end of it

That’s fine, but I just don’t think the player is worth that value. As others have said, I would rather invest in two players with that money who we can develop with good coaching. We’re not a poor club, but let’s not pretend we’re Birmingham, Wrexham or a parachute club.
We don't know what we are. If we're bidding it, we can afford. Why are people on here telling the club what they can afford?
They'll stop at a point they aren't comfortable and they'll move on if need be, but all signs point to another bid.

We obviously have ambition to go up, the club have identified Hughes as a player with massive potential. Let them do their thing. Saying 'buy 2 £4 million players' is meaningless. Darnell Furlong went for £4 million yesterday and that one is a big no from me.

We have to trust the club and the recruitment department, they haven't made any big mistakes until we panic bought Bassette and even then you can see he has attributes that could take him into a decent career if he sorted out his attitude.

Would be really happy if this happens. He looked very good against us although I wasn’t able to gauge how quick he was. Does he have pace? As many have suggested this is the attribute we need most from a new CB.

I think even with Bassette we’re likely to make money on any sale a la Binks.

Seeing how Doug operated with Kitching, I don’t think he walks away when the club is set on a player.

Must also be encouragement from Hughes and his agent to bid three times and soon to be four times.

£12 million plus add ons?

If anyone thinks we are spending £10m on a CH to put him on the bench behind Thomas and Kitch then they are bat shit bonkers ….

Absolutely right but I think I read somewhere* that Hughes can play LCB and RCB. If so he's ideal as we can rotate Thomas, Kitching and Hughes for rest purposes and to cover injuries and suspensions. I would be quite excited to get him, although the fees being quoted are very high. I'm not at all convinced it will happen but we will know soon enough.

* Probably on here, so I'm not sure how accurate it is 🙂

If he has a good season with us, we make play offs, etc, he’ll be worth another £6/7m on whatever we’re paying. Sounds like if it makes commercial sense and benefits the team, Doug will go for it.

Loans would clearly benefit the team but Doug isn’t interested as they’re a liability.

I didn’t say we couldn’t afford it, I said I don’t think it’s a good investment which is different. Yes, Darnell Furlong isn’t a great, but two 6 mils would seem a to follow the strategy that has worked for us so far.

But again, i'm not trying to argue, 'two 6 mils' means absolutely nothing. Its just placing a number on something. The club have identified their target and are going for it, good for them. If another club in the league made this signing everyone would be like fair play for the ambition, when its us everyone gets scared that we might finally spend a few quid.

The owner or outside investment, it doesn't really matter. We're well within the spending rules. I suspect certain other clubs aren't.

Don’t worry about the back and forth bud. Happy to have the civilised debate!

I would think that surely the club could look at their budget, set their thoughts out and with Austin look to scout players who haven’t played at championship level, but could be developed and improve our depth. Surely it’s possible to say this is what we have, who would be the best two players we could find at that range and have further potential?

Bit of an unknown for a lot of us though :ROFLMAO: Its like winning the lottery and still thinking you still need to shop at Farm Foods.

Indeed, i'm sure there are good players out there in that price range, we've found many... heck there's probably someone out there for £1 million if your scouting is bob on, but i like we have a target we are going right after. We want to get promoted now so we're going for it and i respect it.

Kitching is fairly shit by defensive metrics in champ so I think he has to be upgraded.

Yeah with the two of them it’s do you lose Kitchings passing or Thomas’ goals. Personally I think that’s a no brainer. Thomas is so unique in being a threat in the air I just can’t see him being the one to make way.

I think Lampard likes both more than critics of either would have you think but i agree i think he prefers Thomas. You are also right in that Thomas is a huge goal threat, more so than certain strikers in fact, so i think its a weapon he'd want to keep in the team.

Yeah we can afford to shop at Iceland. 🤭

Though more seriously whatever deal the club is negotiating I don't think it is going to be above the market rate.

Because of the underlying reason for the embargo which is cash flow
This is the bit I don't get - whoever places the club under an embargo is because of poor financial management. It shouldn't be a case of if they want to sell or not, they should be having to evidence better financial cash flow - which would be sales of key assets. Key assets which you'd argue they wouldn't have if they weren't dicking about with unfair financial management.
