Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Hands up, who here would still be in a job if they were caught watching porn on their phone, whilst in the middle of an important meeting. There are literally no standards within this Government. Satire is dead, there's nothing you could make up that this lot aren't capable of in real life!

Cheap Laptop for less than £250

Yep, in fairness I've got plenty of kit for my work, and a ton more old stuff besides (IT hoarder alert!) but the school pass on a lot of stuff in Office, and want it back in the same format. The kids do get a student licence for free, but of course the laptop has to be able to run it. I'd be...

    Can't bloody believe this!

Sorry to hear it HH, sounds like you're both going through it. It's easy to say from here of course, but you've got to take care of yourself too mate or you'll be no use to anyone. I think you're allowed to let the diet slip and take on a bit of junk food/chocolate/booze at times like these. 🙂

Cheap Laptop for less than £250

Definitely interesting that, thanks. The worry is that we're tied into MS Office for work and school. With apologies for another probably daft question, can you save Google docs into Word and Excel readable formats, do you know?

Cheap Laptop for less than £250

The pets are non negotiable of course, but maybe there's scope to make a bit of room elsewhere? 😁

Cheap Laptop for less than £250

I thought about one of them, but I was put off by people saying they didn't work well with MS Office. I also wasn't keen on anything with less than a 128Gb SSD. I could well be talking out of my backside of course, if you've got one can I ask how you get on with it?

Cheap Laptop for less than £250

Sorry, ignore that, the link I was looking at was for a used one on Amazon. Might still be decent value though, it is at least a recent spec.

Cheap Laptop for less than £250

Just a thought, and possibly a stupid one, but does it have to be a laptop? In my experience you'll get more bang for your buck with a desktop PC. As a possible alternative, after a fair amount of research I bought the kids one of these on Amazon before Christmas. Going new for £280 at the...

    USSR invades Ukraine.

He just can't bloody help himself can he? I'd cheerfully acknowledge the government appear to be doing good work in supporting Ukraine with weapons, but surely the sensible thing to do is to not overblow it for the purpose of domestic politics. Less talk, more weapons, would seem to me to be...

    Panorama - post office scandal

It's not blind hatred, it's based on evidence. You just don't like to hear it because you can't square the circle of thinking of yourself as a decent person whilst actively supporting a corrupt party led by a liar and criminal. I can't help you with that, I'm afraid. Just to return to the...

    Panorama - post office scandal

Did he break the law or not? Was it the same law that he went on television most nights for weeks, urging the rest of us to comply with, or not? The same law that even the Queen complied with at the time of a great personal tragedy, or not? This is not the same as driving over the speed limit...

    Panorama - post office scandal

So basically you had no point whatsoever. What an absolute waste of time. Sorry if it hurts you pointing out this government's manifold failings, they're in charge though, own it.

Keep on defending him lad, it's just shows for the moral vacuum you are. 'Party of law and order' 😂😂😂

    Panorama - post office scandal

It's a scandal alright, but can you be a bit clearer on the specific role of the Labour government of the time in it? Were there donors to the Labour party somehow directly benefitting from Post Office incompetence and management malice, perhaps? I'm all for challenging government corruption...

Student loan interest - an absolute disgrace

Apologies mate, never responded to this. Thank you for the kind words, in fairness I think SBD's idea above are pretty solid. To me, at least, it feels like the root of the problem is trying to monetise something that is of benefit to the whole of society. If graduates generally earn more...

Student loan interest - an absolute disgrace

With apologies, I'm doing this on the phone, otherwise I could work the figures through (though I'm reasonably confident the New Statesman has it right!). In essence it's a combination of all of the changes. A lower threshold means that more low earners will be pulled in. A longer repayment...

Student loan interest - an absolute disgrace

In a nutshell, the threshold to start paying back has substantially dropped, the period before write off has substantially increased to 40 years, and the interest rate is now linked to inflation. I work in consumer finance, these days specifically on mortgages. Student debt is considered when...

Student loan interest - an absolute disgrace

Here's an example that clarifies the point: The analysis shows that the lifetime repayments of a graduate in 2023-24, earning £22,000 in current prices with projected lifetime earnings of £850,000, would rise by 150% – from just below £9,700 now to £24,000. In contrast, the loan repayments of...

Student loan interest - an absolute disgrace

This is why Tories shouldn't be allowed to run the country, they have no grasp of arithmetic. Look again at the numbers, and stop being so deliberately dim. If you earn less you end up paying more back. These new Tory rules obviously benefit the richest. Both The New Statesman, The Guardian...

Match Thread Birmingham City (A) - Fri 15th April

Yes, it's bloody confusing. On the online journey planner it's showing two trains an hour between Cov and New Street, and no mention of replacement buses. Yet the National Rail site seems to imply that there will be buses between Cov and BHX. Hopefully it's a bit clearer by tomorrow morning -...
