I don't think managers really have the option of saying nothing. I doubt he rang up the paper last night and demanded to have his insightful comments published - I'm guessing that they contacted him. Lots of media outlets with lots of space to fill leads to lots of inane comments!!

I try to brush them off when I can....... More seriously, I think everyone is aware of AT's limitations, but are also aware that he is working under (if you'll allow a degree of understatement) "difficult conditions" and so are prepared to take a more balanced view.

I presume that there is at least a degree of irony in the posts that criticise AT, generally in long threads that are very critical of AT, but then finish with comments like - "However, no blame or criticism can be attached to AT......" :):)
