Confirmed Signing Caleb Yirenkyi (7 Viewers)

Think hes been poor TBH. very limited player. Onyeka does a better job.

He tires way too easily and has cost us goals not getting out to player to block shots.
And gives away needless free kicks and gets booked

Keep seeing this mentioned. This could be under instruction.

Often it’s much better to let, for example, a centre back shoot from 35 yards (yes, I know what has happened recently!) than subtract the number of players in the box / defending the box.

I’ve just noticed we’ve done this quite a bit now, not just Yirenkyi guilty of it.

Fwiw I think for his age, he looks a strong and competitive player and think he will get better as he settles.

He is the best hope of the new young signings of making it

I like him as a signing but right now he doesn't win the ball as well as Onyeka and he doesn't pass the ball as well as Grimes, Torp or Hamer. He's not justifying selection in midfield. Could start RB or at a push RCB in a 3 while Bobby is out. Otherwise he's on the bench

Im wondering if there was an agreement to play him if fit when he signed.

He’s still so young and raw but has potential. He needs an experienced top flight midfielder next to him who he can learn from. We don’t have such player to support him…

A Grimes replacement should have been a top priority during the summer. There’s a lot revisionism on here though and the consensus was that he’d be more than capable of stepping up.

I think with Yirenkyi we need to have some perspective. He is only 20, he's moved to a new country and he's being expected to boss the midfield in the toughest league in the world with zero protection from his peers. Most of us at that age had not long left school.

Hopefully he can learn fast, but I just don't think playing him alongside Grimes is giving him the protection he needs. That is the argument for playing Onyeka or even Hamer.

We have to hope he can improve game on game and increasingly become a force to be wreckoned with in this league. I do think we need to persevere with him. He has been half decent. Although his best game for us I thought was vs Forest.

I agree...I even thought that..what woukd we look like if we had Hamer sitting with Yirenki..yes we woukd have even less of the ball os there woukd be no sidwards backwards go slow tactics. Hamer would at least look up and look forward.

Grimes doesn't even take free kicks or corners anymore which were rubbish. So what's his use???

Id rather have less ball and be even more direct if that makes a difference.

Hamer is clearly nowhere near fit enough to be starting games.

Even with his cost, given his age and circumstances you'd expect him to be raw and drop in and out of the team. What we really needed was an experienced PL head playing next to him and whoever else to manage games. Basically our Xhaka signing.

Instead they decided that Grimes would do that job despite him being pretty much untested at PL level and a number of us doubting his ability to do it. Sadly, that seems to be the case. Our next best bet is Onyeka who does have some PL experience, but again isn't that calming, controlling influence in the middle we need.

It's an absolute priority now in the Jan transfer window, but it's likely going to be much harder to do it then than it was in the summer. If results continue as they are then we'll be near the bottom and players will be reluctant to join, or likely to ask for high wages which King is unlikely to sanction. Plus Jan always seems to be more expensive as teams know when others are desperate.

I feared it would come back to bite us in the summer and nothing has changed my mind.

Not moving players on while their stock was high was also very odd. Players like Torp, Simms, even BTA would have fetched 20-30 million. Could of allowed a couple more experienced players in.

Even the loan market was under utilised, we could have signed 3 more loan players. ( 1 from the prem and 2 abroad).

I still like the Yirenkyi signing but an older head alongside him was needed.

I’d be trying for Jensen in Jan, out of contract in the summer. Could do a loan with option if we stay up. Natural Grimes upgrade.

Couldn’t agree more, Wright, Simms, Torp, BTA, Woolf, Bidwell, Eccles, Lati should have all been sold and upgraded.

I think he's probably capable of doing more than he's being asked to do. His heatmap against Fulham is telling, his positioning on the pitch is deeper than Grimes.

I don't think he's up to the fitness level he needs to be at yet either.

I think he’s under instructions to sit deeper and support protecting the right flank.

The composite team heat map against Fulham showed we may as well have stuck a keep off the grass sign centrally in the opposition half, everything was focussed wide. Fulham far more evenly spread so no surprise they found it easy to walk through our midfield, Shea Charles bossed that space.

I know Lamps likes his width but we’re good at defending crosses from wide positions and need more bodies joining into attacks centrally to help transition and support Cherif who looks isolated, so time for some to play a bit narrower. Rudi goes looking for the ball but generally wide too and very few occasions where we made it beyond the 18 yard line wide, whole thing looks on a map how it felt, too defensive, too many sideways and backwards passes, no commitment to attacking in numbers and constantly looking to use width when we don’t have supporting numbers centrally to make anything of it.

Love to see the handbrake come off against Sunderland and have a real go, just don’t see that happening and more of the same.

Doing what is asked of him, by Frank. Looks superbly fit.

To me he looks like he’s trying to take on board a lot of instructions… looked extremely raw and instinctive at first, now he looks like he’s second guessing himself at times. Hopefully he can put it all together soon.

He is being coached through the games at the minute - you could hear on footage at the weekend the coaches telling him what to do.

Agree with most of this. Tactically we set up defensively. People can blame grimes all they want but they need to look at the structure of the team, the stats and heat maps

Lampard has got a majority of things right since joining but it was a ‘safe’ home set up and safe team selection with workers out wide. Fulham were set up well and while they had a lot of possession it didn’t feel dissimilar defensively to Hull and we struggle break down these teams that sit. Need an early goal/take the lead otherwise it’s just frustrating

Will say it until I’m blue in the face, we need more from wide areas and Rudi to be focussed more centrally. If not, we may as well stick him into one of the wide roles as he’ll work, create and puts in the best crosses. It will be a bit of a waste but it’s kinda what we’re seeing anyway and it would give us an extra body centrally

Grimes should be doing that. But unfortunately he is spending his time sitting between the central defenders, struggling to keep up with the pace of the game.
His heatmap shows him further forward than Yirenki tbf, generally getting about the pitch more. I know it is very fashionable to pin everything on Grimes but imo Yirenki's complete lack of contribution is a bigger problem. 3 passes into the final third for Yirenki vs 9 from Grimes.
