The current squad are nowhere near the level, if they were they'd already be there.
That's hardly a ground breaking revelation. But players can develop into PL quality.
Lampards job is to identify those that can and replace those that can't.

Right. So what I said then. 🙄

FWIW I don’t think Onyeka is miles ahead of everyone in the squad like many on here are claiming.

People said it was like a training game against preston but it felt that agaisnt swansea second half too , i think we are simlply a level above these sides , i think we can personally start next season with

MVE
Thomas
EMC
Rudoni
Onyeka

And rushworth if we fluke it

I may be wrong but i also think wright will do a job but a new striker will come no doubt

Part of me doesnt want a brand new 11 as i think it will be detrimental

He is. No one could do the job he came in to do. That's why our away form went to shit and got back on track when he came.

Clint it’s because he said he was a failed prem player, not worth signing and still tried to slag him off after Boro.

He doesn’t have the humility to admit he’s wrong

I completely agree with you. There may be others who rise to the occasion and prove to be good squad players also.

Not good enough for a top half side, his game time declined as Brentford improved year on year.

At worst, he’s still going to be a solid squad player in the prem.
Will be one of our first names on the teamsheet. If anything can see Grimes dropping to squad level. Onyeka is better than many think still. He can only play against the opposition in front of him.

I agree with you on this. I think Grimes drops to the bench, which is a shame as he's our title winning captain and some player. We'll need the Grimes profile but i think quicker honestly.

We don’t know what players are in the recruitment pipeline which is why I said ‘at worst’. Back in Jan I said Onyeka was better than what we’ve got so think he will be ahead of Grimes in the pecking order next season.

Without jumping ahead too much, it’s also v likely that our tactics and system will change a lot in the Prem. Lampard has demonstrated that he’s a flexible coach in this regard.

I've been playing with the idea of Lampard building a team around Onyeka, but immediate bump back down to earth with considering the risk.

I don’t think he’s a player to build a squad around, personally.

We’ll probably try to sign someone who’s similar to Grimes but can operate at a higher level in the medium term.

I could probably see us 3-4-3 or 5-3-2 next season.

Will be interesting to see how Lampard sets us out next year.

Just reviewing the last season with him, we’ve played a 4-2-3-1, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2. Personally think we’ll see a lot more of the 3-4-3 especially away from home or in tough matches

I'm pretty sure that Matt Grimes will start the first game of next season. Lampard thinks a lot of him. In one of his interviews after the Swansea game he referred to Grimes staying there despite having PL offers. I think he believes him to be a player capable of playing at that level and he deserves to be.
I hope he's right, i'd absolutely love him to step up. At the same time i hope they are succession planning.

He’ll start the season imo. He definitely deserves a shot at the Prem but looking at the games for us he’s struggled in, it’s all been against parachute payment teams who have a bit of Prem quality about them.

That could be tactical though because Grimes can do a lot of different things. Since Jan/early Feb, Grimes has been noticeably more direct times and we see more of those first time long balls down the flanks and so on.

I don’t think we can completely mothball the squad if we go up. We don’t know who exactly will make the step up and there will be a few surprises.

We should really be getting in a CM, who can be talismanic, in that Xhaka mould
Still don't mind the Barkley suggestion. Cheapish (which gives us more to spend elsewhere), experienced and crucially we've seen at Luton he didn't down tools in a scrap. Was their best player by a mile and probably the only good summer signing they made.

I think it’s pretty safe to say, barring any shocks, Allen will be the only midfielder to go, which suggests we probably only have space for 1 midfielder, and maybe one forward who can play at number 10

Might be something in Saddles Martel rumour.

I won't include Rushworth but if i was going to make a guess i'd say 5 outfield players we currently own start the first game. That may go down as new players bed in. Someone bookmark it and see how close i get.

Nah you’re alright. It’s too entertaining watching you all refuse to accept we’ll need to sign players to play in the best league on the planet. 🤣
Where have I said that? I've just said that Grimes will start the season based on the words his manager / Head Coach uses to talk about him.
