That wasn't the issue, it was the fact that it was orchestrated before the game kicked off.

But, as you say, it's the present that counts.

I too was at the game in 1977. An orchestrated outcome wouldn’t have seen us go into a 2-0 lead or squander that lead before the Sunderland game ended.

Just like 1997 all Sunderland had to do was equal our result for their safety. I can understand why all those associated with Sunderland were pissed off about the delay and the last 15 mins of “play” but the people who bring up Tottenham delaying their kickoff in 1997 seem to blame us as well (and ignore the fact that Spurs really really tried to send us down that day)

And why have Sunderland fans never been angry with Bristol City for 1977 ?

Given the kidk off was delayed because the Police requested it given late arrival of supporters, of course it was orchestrated before kick off. When else could it have happened? After the final whistle or half time? Pratt.

I wasn’t born until 1983 so It was before my time but my point has always been - they ignore the fact they didn’t win enough games over the season but blame their relegation SOLELY over the fact our game was delayed.

Mass enough points then it doesn’t matter.
It’s such a bullshit resentment from them.

A typical example where blame is cast externally rather than blaming themselves

I suppose Jimmy hill grinning with their manager in their dressing room and sharing champagne didn’t help.

Especially as their manager was his mate

Constantly seeing their goal on instagram and every time it grates me. Getting so much attention on football accounts and just feels like it should be us.

I've said before but although I had been going sice the end of 1972, this was the first match I really remember attending.

I was only 11 but even I thought the atmosphere and the way the teams were passing it was odd.

Don't know if I've made this bit up but also recollect being in a mixture of home and away fans.

Anyway, really can't see what the fuss was about. Sunderland went down because they weren't good enough over the whole season, nothing to do with us.

It didn't help Sunderland get enough points to stay up, certainly.

The post you've quoted is correct; it's an example of people finding a way to put the blame elsewhere when they fall short. They're hardly alone in that.

The other bit that gets ignored in talk about ‘77 is the games the week of the cup final.

This was a time when clubs had small squads and pretty much played the same 11 each week. There were rules that they had to field their strongest available sides.

Bristol City and West Ham were involved in the relegation fight and each played a cup finalist (Liverpool and Man Utd) on the Monday before the final.

The two finalists put out reserve teams and Bristol and West Ham unsurprisingly won games that they would otherwise have been expected to struggle in.

Without those results, the Bristol City game would have been an end of season non event for us.

Without the scoreboard and delay, we would have lost.

Meh... Not overly impressed tbh. The whole 'Black Cats' thing is hilarious in itself. They didn't have a proper nickname so just made one up for themselves in the 2000s.

Got to admit it worked out when they score in the last minute and it has “To The End” plastered on all the footage.
