I do feel like these fairytale runs are distracting from just how poor quality women's tennis is at the moment - seems to me anyone in the top 200 can win the Slams, it's just who wants it the most during the course of the two weeks. The fact they get paid the same as men is borderline criminal.

I play tennis every now and then, used to play competitively about 10 years ago, and I'm confident I could win matches against most of the top seeds.

I'm made up for her, amazing achievement, seems really level headed and a great kid too, but to change my stance based on success would be an awful thing to do, British if you win but not if you lose. No issues if she wants to call herself British and play as a Brit knowing the trappings and sponsorship that will follow as first female slam champ in nearly 50 years - good luck to her I'd do the same, but in her heart I'd be surprised if she doesn't think differently.

She's playing as a Brit as she considers herself British. I imagine she doesn't really care if the odd idiot thinks she shouldn't be allowed to call herself British. To be honest I prefer it when there are a whole raft of potential winners and it could be a shock. I want the competition to be evenly spread out not one or two dominating.

To be fair some of the play from the top players has looked poor. The fact a qualifier can get this far isn’t really a ringing endorsement- I saw the QF and the Olympic champion was dire. Barty looks all over the place, Osaka seems gone and Petriva was poor in the semi

If someone moves here the day after they're born and spends their whole life here are they 'more British' than someone born here but moved the day after and never came back?

It's not PC but he's right, most people identify with their parents cultures more. My wife was born here and she doesn't really consider herself British. It's only a problem if you consider foreign people as lesser. Its funny how offended some people get by it, if I moved to Japan when I was 2 I doubt I'd be considered Japanese.

My wife was born in Scotland and lived there into her 20s, but was repeatedly told 'yeah but you aren't though' for not having the right accent as her parents are both English. So she sees herself as English anyway as a fuck off to all the Scots who said she didn't count
