Is this a critical moment in the context of the pandemic? Are we about to see a complete break down of society in the states with unemployment, racism and deep inequality acting as a powder keg for huge change?

I dont understand why protesters have attacked the CNN building in Atlanta. When it was a black CNN reporter who was arrested for no reason, not really the fault of CNN.

Don't think people act rationally when they're that angry.
And seeing a fellow citizen murdered by a police officer who it then transpired had a long history of such behaviour would certainly make you angry!

There were also police mingling with protectors pretending to be CNN reporters but again, not CNNs fault.

Its desperately sad. There was clear video evidence of the murder yet it took riots and three police precincts being burnt down before any action was taken. And there's huge numbers of police protecting his house.

Trump quoting Walter Headley and instructing the National Guard to shoot protesters, some of whom have been killed. Reporters being arrested and shot at, with rubber bullets, live on TV.

Hard to believe what we're seeing, its like a movie set in a dystopian future. We can hope for a change but you only have to take a quick look at social media to see Trump supporters defending the murder and excusing the racism, or being openly racist themselves.

They have a valid reason to protest, burning down homes and buildings and looting from stores is a joke and they're just using this as a reason to act like arseholes. They had a man on the news who sunk his life savings into a sports bar and it was destroyed before he even had a chance to pull his first beer. They're destroying their own community and the lives of their neighbours.

I’m sure this was the take of a load of people when they chucked a load of tea in Boston harbour and now they commemorate it.

Yep that’s what distresses me the most. Pales into insignificance when compared with the murder itself but you heap more and more violence and everyone suffers. And the black community more than any other

White folk telling black folk how to be angry.

They tried peacefully kneeling and the fucking cunts kicked off at that.

It’s not that, if you expect to resolve things long term you need to visualise an idea a hope and then put steps to make them happen. The black community will not win an armed fight against the authorities it’s better to use old women on buses. Anger totally understandable of course but we need less violence not more

But when black people see white people protesting against lock down with bazookas strapped to their back and the POTUS asks State governors to give in to their demands then unfortunately the message to draw from that is use force.

I didn't think Killer Mike would ever top his work with Outkast but he's done it there. Interesting to see pieces of shit like Mike Pence and *insert the name of anyone on Fox News* calling for calm protest when they were the same ones telling Colin Kaepernick he should know his place, shut up and play nice.

This is literally a matter of life or death for millions of people and you’ve made it about you and to add to that it’s something you’ve made up.

I understand this is a topic that is extremely upsetting, but I think you've missed my point entirely.

Your point wasn’t needed is my point.

That isn't an argument.

Surely when dealing with an issue such as institutional racism, it would be counter-productive to start making it a turf war.

People should be on one side shouldn't they? In agreement that it's wrong.

Telling me I should feel guilty for my skin colour is hypocritical and unhelpful.

To label being asked to show compassion and empathy for others as “guilt” is quite frankly incredible. (You or others doing that)
I don’t want to get into an argument about it anyway you are a decent bloke from what I can gather on here and as you pointed out this is a very touchy subject for me. I was hesitant to even open the thread if I’m being honest but the majority of comments are pleasing to see.

I certainly have compassion and empathy and I'm not surprised people are rioting.

My own personal thoughts and unfortunately I have seen many posts saying as such, is to feel guilty as a white man is just ridiculous. Sadly this hasn't just been something I invented because I was bored.

The reality is that people need to join together to show it is not acceptable.

I say the same thing about feminism, which is obviously totally different from this. Saying all men are hideous beings doesn't win many of them over to push for equal rights.

Sorry if my post appeared visicious, it wasn't supposed to be at all.

One worrying and inevitable part of the protests are the white supremacist groups getting in on the act and causing havoc under the pretence of support in order to justify the shouts of THUGS and LOOTINGS GET SHOOTINGS

(ps meant Outkast the group yeah, would also highly recommend his Run The Jewels stuff but that's for another thread)
