We look well on top, just need a better final ball and a bit more composure.

They are there for the taking

Don’t think westBrooke was bad at all. Out of position, first game, tending to play safety first, creative free kick. I would play him 10yds further inside second half.

Fuck me these match threads have turned toxic. Just 2 or 3 people reaffirming their confirmation bias. Southend are here to work hard for a point. Our young team are the only ones trying to play football but are struggling to break their deep defence down. Chaplin should have done better with a couple of his half chances. This game will open right up 2nd half and we have a very good chance to win it.

Fingers crossed it's for us! They want to play in the air and direct and are trying to press us. Hopefully they will tire

The keeper didn't bother with it, it wasn't that close :( need to be testing the keeper at least

Just watched it back and the keeper absolutely did bother with it, he put in a full dive. It was about 2ft wide

tell me you have your tongue firmly in your cheek?

If clarke Harris had played like Chaplin in the first 45 minutes you’d be saying he shouldn’t play again. You’ve slagged off a debutant whose at least played a decent free kick in for Chaplin to fluff embarrassingly

Chaplin wasted best chance in a v poor first half. Shipley has lost confidence and we are too slow making decisions in their half. Must move the ball quickly when we have hiwula and Chaplin up front.

Hardly awful. I was right behind it and it was only a yard or so wide (after cutting in an beating his man).

At least be honest with your criticism !

Should’ve done better with the volley though

You are behind the goal?

We can’t pass properly at all, just hit and hope or give it away. On the occasional time we do the right thing, we take about 30 seconds too long to do it.

Lack of wingers in the overall squad, never mind the match day squad, really restricts our options. Westbrooke is clearly not a winger and is an absolute passenger. I’m sure it’s not helping his confidence.
As we know Shipley is not a winger, so regardless of how well (or not) he is playing, his instinct is to drift inside, so we are essentially playing with no width, the middle is too crowded, or players aren’t making space, which is why we are often reverting to long ball.

Only thing we could do is give McCallum a go on the wing, or put Andreu 10 with a narrow three behind him and two in front. However not sure that’s a great option.

As poor as Chaplin is, I don’t want to see JCH, at least not yet.

They look bang average, so if we press more they will struggle. However we look lethargic and clueless going forward.

Stop bringing a bit of common sense to the thread.

Awful? Ha. Laughable.

First one from the free kick, very poor, second one, decent turn and shot just wide. Not awful by a long chalk. .... unless you have an agenda of course.;)

Both Hiwula and Chaplin have been distinctly average today though.

Are we playing to Chaplin strengths yet? What about the free header which he managed to head into a defenders shoulder?

Stopped reading them during the game now as it’s crazy how negative they are

I think Hiwula has worked pretty hard; he’s won a few headers and tried to link play. Especially considering he’s almosr playing as a quasi target man, which isn’t his game. He definitely has technical ability, but (similar to Chaplin) we aren’t playing to those strengths.

Ha.

Block by the defender there to my mind.

Happy to look at the replay though.

The free kick miss was very poor.

Christ we are still not playing to Chaplins strengths
