Doctor Who and Star Trek are a lot more thought provoking and ask moral questions such as involving the playing of God and of the taking of or the saving of a life etc. Moral dilemmas to be mulled over.

I don't think it's just that a woman has been appointed, I have no doubt she will do a good job, it's more that the BBC have probably actively seeked a woman to fill the roll to appease the pressures of their diversity and equality quotas.
People can snigger from their paper castle's, but I would expect something like Tracy Beaker being replaced by 'Trevor Beaker' to cause far more of an outcry than this, should it ever happen, to be completely honest.

Because of BBC cutbacks I think you will now find that it is Empty Beaker.
This has been bought up a lot, about it being BBC diversity, but it was Chris Chibnall who wanted her and he's said she was his first choice all along.
Yes he was and he envisioned someone more like the benign character portrayed by Peter Cushing in the movie version than the cantankerous old misery that Hartnell played.
I couldn't careless if it is a man or women to be honest I don't watch it that often, but you do get the impression they actively wanted a women to play the part to make a statement in some pc equal rights move. Its just like how they did the female ghost busters movie or they are now doing a female version of oceans 11.
a girl changing to a boy in a program about the trials and tribulations of a teenage girl isn't quite the same as a man changing to a woman in a show about time travelling doctor who fights a variety of monsters and maniacs on a host of different planets armed with a screw driver though.
I thought once Russel T Davis moved on there would be less of this. Torchwood was spoiled by constant gay references with no substance. We see Gwen and Rhys and how their courtship and marriage progresses - so if Captain Jack is gay and he wants to have a relationship with Ianto, not a problem...but lets see how that develops as two people, rather than putting in quips and double entendres to try and prove a point.
Appreciate that the BBC wants to try something new and perhaps has boxes to tick - and Doc Who because of his anything-can-happen premis would be the perfect vehicle to explore some issues. Just don't want those issues to get in the way of the story.

Pretty much every single episode of this past season Bill had to tell someone she was a lesbian or hint at her not going for men. Seemed very much a deliberate ploy.

Doctor Who has always had lots of strong female characters. Even in the very first episode there were two females and two males.
The two female roles were Barbara and Susan.
Most of the Doctor's companions through the entire series have been female.
Zoe (played by Wendy Padbury) springs to mind as a companion who was portrayed as equally intelligent as the Doctor.
I tried to get into it but never been fussed. I love sci fi and all but just couldn't connect. I cannot see why this isn't feasible given that there have been about 10 different people play the character. Although a male - female switch really didn't work on ghostbusters!

As long as it's Terminator 2 and she gets melted down at the end.
I suspect this is a case of Jody Whitaker suffering the same kind of prejudices& backlash that back in the day the first female Physicians faced...along with the first female pilots, female bus drivers, gays, blacks...plus countless more non-white 'alpha-male' types have been subjected to. Dr is not gender specific.
I have never actually liked the programme myself. I might just give it a fourth go in support of my open-minded, non-discriminate side.

I've never been hooked on it but watched it as a kid without being enthralled.
The more recent production of say the last ten years has been improved through more imaginative writing and production /technological improvements.
That hasn't hooked me personally but when and if I've tuned in its been good entertainment.
A 'lad' that goes into meltdown when anything that isn't geared towards white males happens.
You see, I WAS enthralled as kid. Mesmerised and thrilled in equal measure and because I grew up with it and it formed a significant part of my viewing life (there was nothing else like it) it has stayed with me and I religiously still watch it now. There are a number of by the numbers epsiodes, but it is worth sticking with it for the odd gem that really shines and is brilliantly written and played out.
Doesn't bother me at all that a fair few on here have slated it, it remains saleable asset all around the world. 50 countries at last count. Also doesn't bother me that some say it's for kids. Clearly not to my mind, for a survey was carried out in the 1970's and 60% of the viewers were said to be adults.
My daughter got into it at 9 and now we both watch it together and both really look forwards to every episode. Long may it continue. It's an institution.
It's nothing to do with 'prejudice'. It's about the way the series has been buggered about with the last few years making a mockery of everything that's gone before it. Changing the lead character from male to female was simply the last straw for many viewers who've struggled to keep watching the series this long. I already gave up even before the most recent series was shown and it had nothing to do with who was playing the lead.
Yeah you are right. It's not shite. I just don't particularly like it. It obviously has it's merits, and many people do like it.
Easier to bellow "SHITE" though.
