Dovin was a top 5 keeper in the league last season. In the Jan-Feb winning streak Dovin was MOTM or thereabouts in most of the games.

Even v Leeds where he made a basic error, he was out MOTM because his saves prevented the scoreline being 3 or 4 to nil. Keepers will make mistakes.

However, we need to sign a credible GK. Collins or Wilson in goal for a prolonged period this season could be costly.
Yeh Dovin is a classy young keeper who's only going to get better imo. To not be convinced by him is a weird one for me as I've not felt so secure with a keeper since Westwood.
Real shame he got injured but we have to play the cards we've been dealt.

Exactly this. He made one big clanger all season but was instrumental keeping us level in games we won away such as Blackburn, Wednesday and home games like Watford, QPR and Bristol City. All 6 pointers that got us within reach of the playoffs.

My rationale for wanting a new, ideally permanent goalkeeper is the possibility Dovin doesn’t return the same player. Leeds had Darlow when Meslier wobbled towards the end of the season so two good GKs is a must.

In the L1 days we were always assuming Jodi Jones would return and give us options out wide and he just couldn’t get fit. GK is obviously a different position but that type of injury could just change him.

He wasn't a top 5 keeper for me, based on the fact he didn't play enough games to be considered such. He's got plenty of potential though.

After yesterday there’s next to no chance he’ll be starting in goal on the opening day.
Well there absolutely is a chance. At the moment who else are you thinking Lampard is going to pick. Collins isn't getting any gametime in pre-season so he's clearly out, is Bell ready to be given a go?

You're relying on the fact we're going to sign someone which needs both the funds to be available to do so and a suitable player to be available and neither of those things is guaranteed.

I've said before with Dovin being ahead of schedule my fear is they will make do with Wilson and rush Dovin back. Hoping I'm proved very wrong.

They’ll know that Wilson is nowhere near good enough and it’s too much of a gamble to rely on him for 3-4 months. I wouldn’t be surprised if they see it has a higher priority than other areas of the pitch at this point.

Yeah this is what I keep coming back to as well. Although he did do two ACLs!
Didn’t JJ come back for a handful of games, even scoring a goal to do his ACL v Peterborough? Then again the ACL on his other knee v Rangers in preseason summer of 19.

Had he not been so unlucky with his ACLs, I’m reasonably certain he’d have been a good contributor for us in the Championship.

Statistically, the metric used is the sum of his saves v xG faced. Over 28 matches and the quality of opposition, it’s not likely to be an anomaly.

Unsurprisingly, Collins and Wilson score poorly here so it’s reasonable to conclude that we’ve got a capable keeper in Dovin.

Who knows how he’ll be when he gets back. Marosi looked a pretty capable keeper and was never the same after Cardiff broke his face.

Exactly my point!

This is quite idealistic, but we need 2 GKs in competition with one another, particularly if we want to get promoted to the Prem any time soon.

Imagine how costly it would be if we start the season with Wilson in goal and Dovin comes back in October (absolute best case) and is a shadow of his former self… we’ll be scampering around for GK in Jan after god knows how many points dropped.

My preference was for us to lose both Collins and Wilson, yet we’ve extended one and can’t shift the other. In a leaky defence already it really needs sorting.

Knowing he's not good enough and having adequate time and money to do something about it are two different things.
I don't want Wilson to be starting the season in goal for us but I've a feeling I may be disappointed.

Personally, I’d be very surprised. His assist yesterday was like a Sunday League keeper who’d been on the piss Friday and Saturday night.

I’m trying to understand what we are going to do with all these keepers.

We just signed that Oscar Varney from Fulham who’s 18 who’s been signed for the U’21s
We have Luke Bell who I’m assuming will get a loan
We have Wilson & Collins this season and then Dovin who’s injured. I currently can’t see a world where we’d sign another unless we can shake off some

It's currently a choice between who will cost us the least points, because they'll both cost us, nothing surer
