I've taken these before - quite different questions this time... but the results came out the same.

Be more specific, please.

- Do you agree that state-funded healthcare free at the point of use is desirable? Yes
- Do you agree that nationalised health care is superior to a competitive marketplace? No
- Does the worship of the NHS make you angry, especially in the light of some terrible service you've experienced? Yes

You're not going to like this, but I'll say it anyway. Many socialists are people who feel the same way about outcomes as many centrists, but they just haven't appreciated that life is more nuanced than they think... and that state control of services is a very sub-optimal. The NHS is a proxy for socialism IMO, which is why it gets venerated so much by people pushing a socialist agenda.

You’d better go tell the British Election Survey people then. I’ll take their data over your inability to string a sentence together thanks.

Wut?

This isn’t rocket science. Britain has some very left wing positions that are unassailable and would be seen as crazy loony left in a lot of the world.

People in this thread having real trouble understanding the difference between being left wing as a whole and being comparatively left wing in a subset.

I think we've played this over many times. I wouldn't want rid of it, no but I would go private if I can afford it in future. Like Trench says, the worship of it is a bit cringe, I've dealt with just as many inept cretins working for the NHS as I have in any other profession.

You’ve deflected a lot but I think you’re saying you don’t want to abolish the NHS. That’s a very left wing position globally. It puts you well to the left of most people.

That’s my point, it’s not some “haha you should vote Labour” gotcha, just a reminder that whats “right wing” in the U.K. is still pretty socialist.

As I showed earlier, pretty much every voter in the U.K. is in the left wing authoritarian space, we’re just arguing over which corner of the corner we’re in. It’s the Labour Party internal squabbling writ large.

If you want to do it the other way, even the most liberal lefty is still pretty authoritarian even though they don’t like to think that way.

Yes I know the English right is further left than many Conservative parties globally, and I don't have a problem with that. English right suits me. The positioning of the political parties on the compass is rubbish though.

It’s not strange at all. It’s as simple as following my own advice. Stop reading headlines and start reading manifestos. Also to compare the Tory government of John Major to this bunch of morons is no comparison at all.

I'm not surprised that mine is very liberal - because I believe passionately in the rights of the individual. But I'm always surprised that I always end up just one square into the Right. I believe just as firmly in the piss poor performance of the state and that free markets always deliver the best outcome. Possibly it's because I think monopolies are as bad as socialism (and what is socialism if it isn't a monopoly, albeit run by a collection of fuckwits)?

Data is great just a shame the votes don’t say the same ey? I’m baffled as to why the loudest in these threads think they’re the majority despite elections and referendums consistently proving them wrong

I remember thinking at the time, that although I didn't think that much of the EU I would never vote for a single-issue party... and suspected it was possibly that they just didn't like foreigners. I don't think Tony's mind works on the same plane as mine though.

It's a good question.

I think the answer lays very firmly in how authoritarian Coventry Labour is.

Or as you say the compass is rubbish and in fact the mean/median point on the left/right axis would be closer to somewhere like -4.

If anyone wants to work out the average so far they can.

Well, apart from the fact the NHS is the very epitome of socialist thinking. Healthcare for all regardless of ability to pay.

Capitalist thinking would deny any healthcare to anyone that couldn't afford it. Even the most capitalist nation on the planet in America they have a very basic level of healthcare paid for by the state. It would also deny any kind of social security/pension/job seekers allowance/widows benefit/child allowance. If you can't pay for it, tough shit - earn more money so you can.

Even the banks became socialists in the banking crisis - quite happy to take on handouts from the government then.

That is total rubbish - most capitalist countries have free healthcare for many elements of society - and of course its not actually free

There are many inept cretins in private healthcare. How many stories in the US have we seen of people hooked on prescription drugs handed out by private doctors like smarties cos they get paid for it? They've got a massive opioid addiction epidemic in the US because they over-prescibe it and people are hooked. Absolutely horrific plastic surgery done by private surgeons for a fortune when there was nothing wrong with their face to begin with - the problem being in their head not on their face.

They just charge you a lot more and will try and get you to have shit done you don't need. If they cure you they stop getting paid. Keep pumping them full of expensive drugs rather than effective treatments and make sure they need to keep coming back.

What would you think if you went private and they misdiagnosed or mistreated you?
