What would happen without Grimes? (8 Viewers)

We'd have to either go very direct and ask a lot more of the backline, or we'd have to stick with some combination of three midfielders with two of them sitting fairly deep. He's like an EFL Kante - coaches of his said it was like having the work of 1.5 players done by one bloke.

We'd have to swap to 5 at the back and play more like the Robins teams probably with one up top away two at home. That's a top half style of play but were short on players to make that kind of switch. Back to rarely winning away and taking risks with a light mf at home, not for me!

Hopefully we can get someone in Jan who can cover for him if he's injured or suspended.

What’s really impressive is that he was identified and brought in as it wasn’t a position where there was a consensus we needed a player.
No concensus on this forum perhaps but F.L. and his coaching team obviously saw the need.
Masterstroke signing him... like all of us I just love watching him play....we have signed some absolute bargains over the last few years for sure but Matt Grimes has to be the best.

Edit: I'm fairly sure he recommended Carl Rushworth to F.L. too.

I was talking to a fellow Cov fan ,I was amazed when he said he did not see what Grimes did or bought to the side. . Players don't have to be spectacular in that position just consistent IE Rodri Kanye, Deschamps , Makelele spring to mind

Dread to think

For all the goals we score he is the one player that I worry about the most as to what would happen to us if we lost him for a significant period

We won 9 out of10 playing 5 at the back last season and beat Portsmouth at their place playing it this season.

Excellent player. You have to have a plan B. If he were injured in an odd way I think the player most like him is Torp. But we’d probably drop Allen in.

Such a critical player. Our most in my opinion. If he got suspended or injured who or what would be the cover? Without Sheaf nobody really springs to mind. Would it require a change of formation?

We clearly haven't got a like-for-like replacement. I guess the possibilities are Torp, Rudoni, Eccles and Allen.

I'd probably go with Rudoni as it is such a critical position. A left-field thought is Wolfenden playing centrally as a third CB just in front of Thomas and Kitching: it probably works defensively but not creatively. The fact that I even suggest it shows how short of cover we are for that position.
