It really didn't and there are proxy wars now - namely this one.

That and the Cuban Missile Crisis are the most well known examples but it was similarly close on other occasions also.

I mean it can’t unless Trump is suddenly willing to give it the means to do so

Well he hasn't flipped yet, still coming out with the pro Ukraine stuff.

Either, as others have said above, he's just parroting what the last person he spoke to said (ie Zelensky) and will pivot next time he speaks to Putin.

Or, Trump doesn't like backing losers - it's possible he's receiving intelligence that Russia is badly struggling (which it has been for a few months) and can't win the war.

I think it's Trump talking indirectly to Putin saying you need to compromise over your unacceptable demands or this war goes on and on.

Best I can come up with, does that make sense because taking it literally does not.

This is incredibly rare.

Hopefully public opinion is shifting in Russia. There are massive fuel shortages in Russia at the moment - fuel being rationed, people queuing overnight to fill their car up - maybe that kind of thing is having an impact.

Russia controls less of Ukraine now than it did 3 weeks into the war.

In the last 1,000 days they have gained 1% of Ukraine. At the cost of 1 million casualties.

Just an absurd situation and a staggering loss of life for no gain.

Ohh haven’t heard the ‘infamous’ counteroffensive mentioned for a while.

Russia’s summer offensive has been an unmitigated disaster. Well, the whole bloody thing has of course.

I think a country with a population three times the side of the one it's invading being unable to achieve it's stated aims deserves to have the piss taken out of it. Not sure the smaller country that's holding the line for years on it's own deserves snarky comments about how well it is or isn't doing.

Another 'infamous' offensive draws to a close.

Russia's latest big Ukraine offensive gains next to nothing, again

Hundreds of thousands of Vladimir Putin's troops are losing their lives for barely any land

In May, Russia launched an enormous offensive aimed at breaking Ukrainian lines. Its furious attacks in the following months set the entire front line ablaze

However, our calculations suggest it has seized just 0.4% of Ukrainian land

Russian forces have achieved no major objectives, with key cities such as Pokrovsk holding the invaders at bay…despite relentless attacks

The offensive has come at an enormous cost: our meta-estimate suggests over 100,000 Russian soldiers have died in the war this year.

100k dead for 0.4% of Ukraine this year. What an absurd waste of human life.

It is a war of attrition, it matters not that the Economist publishes this article what matters is that Ukraine is losing troops too and probably at no less rate that Russia. Ukraine will run out of manpower sooner than Russia, unfortunately it may take a few more years.

I think though printed in an article in the economist there is a similar article in politico which states that the deaths are from Ukrainian sources

This is plainly not true.

Ukraine will run out of manpower sooner than Russia

And this is not guaranteed either - hence why Putin is now more willing to end the war than ever before. 100,000 dead for 0.4% of Ukraine is not remotely sustainable.

You don't need any to understand that Russia have suffered significantly higher losses than Ukraine.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the US government will impose a "substantial pickup" in sanctions against Russia, accusing President Vladimir Putin of not being honest and forthright with Donald Trump.
