Apparently we’re in for £4m-rated Jerry Yates of Blackpool. 14 league goals for a relegated side is a good return and at 26, we’d be getting a player approaching their peak.

I wonder if this is the kind of player we’d go for whether we go up or not. The difference being a replacement or partner for Gyokeres.

If true, a replacement for Walker or Godden

If we get promoted, he’d make a fine addition as a second striker. In the Championship, he’s likely be a first choice option.

Hopefully we’d be able to recoup some money for Godden and Walker if we got promoted. Perhaps £1m or £2m optimistically for both of them. Both players would make really good L1 strikers for a team aspiring for promotion.

Might be a bit of a challenge given Walker's contract is up!

Given one of them will be a free agent I doubt you’d get north of £500k

I’d keep Godden if we went up. He’s a classy finisher and see no reason why he wouldn’t score goals a division higher. He’s been doing a job for the team these last few weeks, what with our injuries to key attacking midfielders. Walker will go as will McGuire.
If we went up I would be happy with Vik, Yates, and Godden.

Weather we go up or not, I think Sidney can Hoijdonk would be a great signing. Not like I've ever watched him mind!

Might be a difficult one to pull off if we're in the championship still.

I think we may keep Walker because he will have some resale value. Assuming you’re right, £500k is the ceiling - £750k if we’re lucky.

We need 3 good strikers to compete in my view. Yates, Godden and another would suffice in the Championship. For premier league we’d need another. I don’t think Godden could make an impact physically and we probably won’t be able to have enough possession to get Godden in the game if we went up.

Overall, I’d sell up if we got promoted.

Is it a skill game in the Prem? Just wondering if the off-ball movement is something to think about? In which case Godden would be ok.

If we go up, I can see us signing Continental players we have never heard of, for a fraction of the price we would pay for domestic ones.

All good players and imo would be good additions to our squad BUT wages ? I don’t know what their individual deals at MU are but take fallen hero Mason Greenwood who United are looking to loan out I’ve read he is apparently on £75k a week. Getting young stars from the top premier clubs it’s high wages and they are a bit of a risk.

Unfortunately it’s why parachute payments are a necessary evil. We’re gonna have to start paying these players top whack.

it’s why it’s not cut and dry whether Hamer and Gyokeres stay. They’re instantly going to be asking £50k plus on their new contracts - if we don’t pay it someone else (west ham and Wolves) will

anyone we sign will effectively on 50k as a minimum id imagine

He’s unlikely to get a brilliant contract elsewhere given his results over the last couple of years.

If he’s on £10/k a week plus as some have rationalised then he’s going to struggle to demand high money.

He just hasn’t suited our style and system.

The only way we should consider keeping him, whatever division we play in, is a contract with a loan out in mind that covers a large chunk of our output. This way we can recall him if he does well.

I think he’s going and will end up at Notts County with Jodi Jones (who I guess will end up there if Oxford don’t trigger his extension).

As for Godden, if we go up he’s sold / released / loaned out for remainder of contract. He’s a great finisher but doesn’t cut it at a high level where he doesn’t get time on the ball.

I agree wrt Gus and Vik.

Our best bet will be to try to rely on a mixture of foreign prospects, top PL loanees and a couple of “been there seen it done it” fringe PL stars with release clauses so we don’t get stung.

We will be hammered with agents offering us players if we go up.

If we go up. we don't have to let the likes of Gus' agent screw us totally with wages. We still have a year of his contract left, and let's say we upped his salary to 35k/40k a week, if he turned it down we could still keep him, and he'd remain on lower wages (which would be mad from his point of view, as he could pick up a career ending injury) We could afford to play a bit more hardball with the guaranteed PL money offsetting the loss of a transfer fee 12 months later.

What’s 40/k a week?

£2m?

Not sure losing transfer fee covers.

If we are successful Saturday I’m sure both Vik & Hamer will stay as they did at the January window, but things happen that can change things clubs with deeper pockets get interested then there’s the likes of Brentford trying to cover their Ivan Toney loss. And top foreign clubs sniffing about I think that’s the biggest danger to be honest wages are just as big and tax is lower.

Worst case scenario is they still go but even in that case the fees we would get would be bigger than as a Championship club.

The good thing is we control that and any sale price both still under contract although only a risky 12 months, a lot hinges on what happens Saturday.

Gyokeres yes - Hamer, depends what other clubs are offering. Like I said, if we offered double or more wages and his agent wants more, I think they'd change position if we made it clear we weren't going to sell him. We wouldn't be being held 'over the barrel' in the same way, as we'd have the PL money which would dwarf anything else. Hamer could be the difference between staying up or not, plus Hamer / agent will see it's madness not to have a shed load of extra money in his wages whilst he is still with us.

Not accepting losing players to Brentford if we're in the same division. They can suck it.

You have to speculate to accumulate, if we go up the priority before any incoming transfers has to be getting these two signed up to long term deals (with some kind of relegation clause). Then we should be looking at getting McNally signed from Burnley, you’d like Doyle back but I think that will only be on loan.

I like the lad Walker-Peters at Southampton he’s a top RB/RWB, if we could get him that would be incredible but I think he’ll have teams up around the European places after him… Alcaraz has looked good for them and Aribo could offer something. Chè Adams could be the perfect foil for Gyo too

Godden’s asset is his finishing so if we can get the ball to him in the box, he will add value.

At the minute, we’re reliant on counter attacking football with fast transitions. Gyokeres is key to making this successful because he is fast, strong and can carry the ball on the dribble. Compare our frustrations with Godden in games like the first two Middlesborough games. He struggled to make an impact.

The difference for me is how we played in League 1 v the Championship. We were more ball dominant in L1 and Godden’s performances stood out more.

To tie it up, if we get promoted, we’ll have even less possession. Therefore, we probably need to double down on the counter attacking football if we get promoted and build a team that can absorb pressure and hit teams on the break. Godden doesn’t fit that bill for me.
