Given Sisu declined various offers from Hoffman for the club I think it’s highly unlikely Sisu simply walked away and gifted it to King. They could have sold Vik, Hamer, Sheaf etc in the Jan then walked away if that had been their plan.

The Hoffman offers for the club were not serious

Yes it still was, because:

Gyokeres has grown in value since leaving through performing well domestically in the top flight, in Europe and internationally

He wasn't going to sign a new contract with us so if we had him in January he'd go for zip

We get a decent chunk of that sell on, so if it is €100m that's another €10m within months of having sold him

What do you think he was worth then?

He was worth about what we got for him. We had one serious bidder and a player intent on joining them. We had to sell him realistically within that summer window.

Well that’s my point. We got about what he was worth. It wasn’t some amazing deal. I think people felt it was because they underestimated inflation and quite how good Vik is (as we always do with elite players that pass through us)

Yeah, add to that a player who basically said, ‘I’m going here nowhere else’ and as far as we’re aware, nobody offered any more anyway If he is sold for say 60m and we’ve ended up with £26m, that’s a great deal for a player in the final year of his contract

It’s the Prem clubs that will be kicking themselves for not making a bigger effort in the summer. Same as when Spurs fannied about with Maddison before he went to Norwich when they could’ve got him for a fraction of what they paid in the summer

We had 3-4 bids knocked back from sporting. Only slight issue for me is I would’ve obviously preferred the higher sell on which was rumoured at one stage

Player power forced the move though

Oh get ya, yeah I don't think by any means it was some master negotiation by Doug King, it was what it was.

Yeah but that's just the standard positioning in a negotiation - they were never going to come in with their best offer first.

I was and still am happy with the deal there were very few voices (if any) on here saying Vik was worth more. If you look at some of his finishes this season he has definitely taken it to a new level. Doug just owning us strengthened our hand as everyone knew Sisu didn't have a pot to piss in so would sell him cheap. Now for a big chunky sell on fee please!

Yes because I don’t think a Championship player has been sold for more than £40-50 million.

We could end up with approx £35m for Gyokeres when comparatively, Brentford sold Watkins (3 years on contract) for about £30m.

The only way we were getting a better deal for Gyokeres was if we got promoted and stayed up.

Promotion and subsequent relegation back to Championship and our cap would be roughly £40m - roughly the same as Maddison to Spurs.

In the end, we got a really good deal. Not much more to say on that.

I think people are still reeling from the play-off letdown (Probably because that was our best shot even though we’d have been as bad as the others that went up). Plus a lot of people backed the club and quite rightly expect something resembling a good team on match day. It was always sold as a five year project.

In the medium term, our recruitment strategy will prove to be shrewd.

Lot of players adapting from overseas or from lower leagues and with more faces in, we’ll be in a very positive place.

We'd have been lucky to get half what we did for Vik according to many on here.

Hamer many were resigned to him going for free.

Well that is indeed fair. However Gyokeres's fee was also fair given he was untried at the top level and had his heart set on a move to one particular club.

Fair sure, evidence of Doug’s negotiating prowess I’m yet to be convinced.

Well we've already ascertained despite zero football experience we'd rather have him do it than half this board!

I do however think you write the Hamer deal off too easily. The easy thing to do would have been to sell him for anything rather than holding nerve. Tbf there was pressure to just get the Gyokeres deal done too and we waited until it was right.

I mean, what is evidence of negotiating skills? Is such evidence ever really there? Could argue Fisher was a genius at that given the fees we got for Stevenson and Bayliss...

I dunno. I don’t think you can compare transfers. Each windows market is different each player is different. I’m just saying if (and it’s an enormous if) Vik goes for €100m in Jan then there’s an argument we undersold him.

Or somebody just gave him the platform to get better exposure.

He's shown it in Europe and the International stage atm this season, and that gives him a decent leg-up value wise. What he's also shown is he can adapt quickly to different surroundings and, as we're currently finding out(!) that can be a valuable commodity of you need a quick hit.

Yeah I mean it’s not like I’ve watched him and as we know he’s capable of coming back for a season a level above where he was. I can accept he’s genuinely twice the player now.

We were so lucky to have him.

I still can't believe he's the same player we had on loan! What we also were, in hindsight, was so lucky he didn't show it during that loan spell and price us out of buying him there and then!

On topic: Would love to see us drop £1-2m on a couple of Vik/Gus/Sheaf style players. Or do we think Saka and Thomas are that?

There were many on here saying to take the first bid, that there was no other interest, and that we would run out of time to sell him.

Funnily enough quite a few of those posters aren't very present anymore!

Gyokeres was worth about 10-12m still is. Hamer probably 12m. I reckon King got about 10m more than he should have.

Given a lot of posters were underestimating what we would get for Gyokores (and Hamer) on the basis that they were only worth what another team was prepared to pay, come the end of the season I think you might find Gyokores is worth a lot more than you think!

Let’s get it in perspective. He’s an excellent player. He’s so far scored decent amounts of goals in the Championship and in the top division in Portugal. If someone spends something north of £50m in him they’ve been had.
