Does that not highlight a problem though? What you're describing there is improvements in automation leading to better conditions for the masses. If you go back far enough you can trace a move from 12 hour shifts 7 days a week to 9-5 Monday-Friday. Thats a clear benefit to the population at large.

If you look more recently automation seems to target reducing the workforce and pushing those remaining workers to do more.

What you describe, and many others have pushed for this, is a version of automation where the money in the economy is evenly distributed. There's very little to indicate that's what we're getting in this country or are likely to get in the future.

Sounds to me like you’ve got a concern with who owns the means of production. Having high productivity is a requirement of high wages but not the only thing. I think the god awful economy the last 15 years is also a thing, it’s not like companies are recording record profits. We’re just wet and poor here.

And if we're looking at AI being annoying then the now daily phone calls from managers saying 'I need you to implement AI' with zero clue what it is or what they want to use it for.

Sounds like a perfect case for an AI auto phone call answering service 🤔

Just say “I’m assessing foundational models as they release but generally so far I agree with the Apple paper” if they ask which Apple paper just scoff and walk off mumbling “filthy casual”. That should put a stop to it, or get you a job as Head of AI.

Well yes but I don't think anyone really considers who owns the means of production until they're sat at home unemployed firing out hundreds of job applications and not getting a response.

We may not be seeing record profits but my experience across three employers in the last 15 years is that those at the very top are doing very well indeed while everyone else is being told there's no money for pay rises and efficiency savings (ie: sacking people and making those who remain cover the extra work) are needed.

Does make you wonder at what point enough people will have lost their jobs, and not be able to find new ones, that we will stop being so passive and see a response more in line with our continental neighbours. But that's probably for the politics thread.

Why do people in big expensive cars have to take calls holding their phone up to their face. Is there not hands free?
