Hot take: driving tests are too lenient. Basically anyone can pass them and you have to really try to lose them. Pass half as many people and retest every 20 years and watch traffic pollution and bad driving disappear.

Our pass rates are already some of the lowest in the world. I like the idea in theory but it would be a huge drag on the economy in reality.

I think we’ve hit peak car in some areas of the country (Foleshill for eg ) and naively hope it would force investment in transport

I couldn't believe the standard of driving in France, Belgium and Netherlands when I was travelling over Christmas. Miles ahead of us in driving ability and condition of the roads.

It would appear a large portion of the problem post on these message boards. Full of OAPs or female drivers by the looks of it

Covid responsible as well, but it was ever thus, simple truth, half of your insurance goes to cover non-insured drivers, government taking it's share?

As for old I've had 45 yrs of pain free driving still, I don't drive much now, only thing changed cars and drivers thinking they're an F1 driver, two the number of them ,the normality of disobeying the the of basic rules such as oncoming traffic give way? Enforce it, does that get that get picked up by insurance black box?
Rant over.

I know I keep saying it but the amount of times that driving is mentioned in this thread makes me think having a car must have some kind of radicalising effect on you after a while.

Reactive behaviour around dogs - it has to stop.

Our two year old dog, despite never trusting strangers (I’m glad), has never reacted as she did today. Was jogging around with her by my side, off her lead as always, around an enclosed field. Woman decides to cross our path and we get within about 10ft of her, she starts screaming and stands still on the spot just squealing towards the dog. The dog is slightly spooked and sort of darts around barking, still from a distance. She’s fucking harmless. If you naturally have an issue with the animal, why voluntarily come close?

Suppose cocker/collies will be next on the hitlist.

Sometimes there’s no option to get close to the dog though. I’ve been out running and had no choice but to run between the dog and its owner and had the dog jump up and been nipped a couple of times.

As someone who was attacked by a dog as a toddler, I don’t feel comfortable around them unless I know them. Not saying they should be banned or anything but a minority of dog owners can be inconsiderate.

I’m sure you wouldn’t seize up on the spot and start screaming though! It was so unnecessary.

I failed mine because some guy sped around the corner as I was about to reverse out. Seemed pretty unfair all things considered

I failed 2 before the test even started. First one I lost my provisional in Magaluf the week previous and didn't notice til the day, 2nd one I smashed the wing mirror off against another car on the way to the test centre and they wouldn't let me do it with one mirror.

I failed my 1st driving test. Was waiting at a roundabout to take the first exit, had my left indicator on ready when when ambulance came up from behind with lights and sirens on. I had to pull over to let it through, stupidly I didn't realise my indicator had self cancelled before pulling away once the way was clear. Failed. Felt very harsh at the time but get it now. Passed on my 2nd attempt thankfully.

We definitely need to bring in retests at a certain age. My Mum 100% wouldn't pass and shouldn't be driving but not matter how many arguments I have with her about it she insists she is fine to drive.

Slight flaw in the plan is that its seemingly near impossible to book a driving test these days without paying well over the odds to some third party service who have used a bot to book all available test slots the second they become available.

Yeah I was going to bring up the ridiculous booking process nowadays. So unfair that companies are exploiting the system. My Niece gave up trying to get a test local to her. She gave in and used a secondary service which meant she ended up taking a test in mid Wales.

it seems like such an easy thing to fix. Can't be that hard for each centre to have a list of local driving instructors and give them priority access.

Don’t you have to even give a name or anything? How can you sell a slot on?

Driving test backlog sees exams sold for over £200

Tests are being resold on a secondary market as learners face months-long waits for an exam.

Mortgage companies.

Fairly sure they’ve taken £600 too much. Called up, took 2 hours on hold to get through, guy says yeah looks like we’ve taken too much. Great I say can I have it back, sure let me just put you on hold. Comes back after ten minutes and says “I can’t confirm or deny if we owe you money well look into it and you’ll get a letter in the post telling you if we do or not”.

Scamming bastards. They know how fucking phones and emails work when they want cash off me.

Trains.

They are a disgrace and the way they cram people on all the time is unsafe.

It's usually the case (not necessarily with mortgages) that if you overpay a refund takes weeks but if you have underpaid it is demanded immediately
