Measuring twice (well, more than twice) drilling once to pop a display cabinet on the wall.

All the measurements perfect... shame I forgot the overhang which means it now covers the light switch!

A little cut-out in the cabinet will ensure the light switch has the emphasis it deserves, at last!

You'd need to cut out the back and as it's for display with a glass front... nope.

I drilled a few more holes to the right(!) At least you can't really notice when it's hanging!

Time to pause this and start a new project: move the light switch.

Sounds like you were bloody lucky not to hit the lighting circuit when drilling the holes for the cabinet fixings!!

Twats driving too fast down icy country lanes, not being able to stop and scraping a trailer down your front bumper, both doors and ripping your back bumper off.

People parking in disabled spaces without displaying a card . A guy park right next to the pub yesterday ran in .When I got in same guy 2 pints in his hand skipping toward his table.
Clamp them charge them £10 to remove it and give it to a disablity charity might make them think twice.
If they don't come again so what. I don't think the pub would lose custom (popular pub)because people with disabilites would soon fill the shortfall.

People who come into the office when they’re sick

There’s 9 people in this office, 3 are currently clearly ill and 2 are joking about how everyone else is going to get it

So now I will inevitably get sick and not be able to visit my Dad in the care home

Again, depends on work policy and how sick they are.

People shouldn't really be having sick days if they just have a cold, surely?

Context is everything isn’t it. I’ve felt rough the last couple of days (just a heavy cold) but as I work from home the majority of the time I’m sound. Was due at an event later today but won’t be going.

Flip that to those who don’t have the option to WFH and are on stat sick pay and I can see why it happens.

Yeah. If unavoidable can understand. Safe to say the culture hasn't shifted as it claimed it would though. The martyrs at my work are back to coming in even when unnecessary

It’s a job that can very easily be done 100% from home

Personally don’t see the point in people dragging themselves into the office to do either fuck all work or mess things up because they’re too ill too concentrate while making everyone else ill

I've worked in places where "Work from home" is an option but not liked and there was no sick pay. Yeah you could ring and say "Im not well I will work from home" but the hassle / arsiness you would get from those above made it not worth it.

If they get full sick pay, there's no "if you are off sick x times" policy and management encourage it then yeah I can see why they should be off sick or at home.

Have always gone to work with colds and only been off when I had Norovirus and couldn't get away from the toilet. However if I worked in a Corporation where nobody cared I'd probably just stay at home off sick on full pay without any black marks / arsiness while somebody else did my work

Yep they’d get full sick pay and there’s nothing in our contracts about how many times you can be off, although obv at a point you move to SSP.

We have a weird thing with presenteeism in this country. Another thing on the list where managers choose to ignore the data, which shows it costs the economy more than sickness itself, in favour of a gut feeling that they’re getting more out of people if they drag themselves in sick

A lot of how it looks is that it's a negative. I've always thought I'd be seen in a negative way if I was off sick for something like a cold.

A lot of the places I've worked, it's been true as well when hearing how people are spoken about... As if they are letting the side down.

Exactly this. There’s always shitty comments about people being off or even stuff like people taking their lunch breaks or leaving on time.

Seems no matter how many studies there are and how much data there is showing they’re wrong manager will always know better

Read a summary of one study where nearly 40% of managers said surgery wasn’t a valid reason for sick leave!

Just got a message from a mate looking for work because his current place just told him planning his dads funeral wasn’t an excuse to take time off during the work day (end of a long list of shitty behaviour). What really is the point here? Hire decent people and treat them well and never have to worry about this.

I turned up to work one Monday at a previous job to a bollocking from my boss for not responding to an email over the weekend despite the fact I didn’t work weekends or do any kind of on call or cover

Told him my Nan had died over the weekend, his response was to tell me about how busy things were at the moment. They did however do me the ‘favour’ of waving their months notice for booking annual leave so I could go to the funeral

Not long after that same boss had an aunt die and took nearly a month off on compassionate leave

An old job, finish time was half five, so I'd leave then. I would, however, get in around half seven because I lived virtually next door and was sad enough to do so.

My boss would turn up half ten to eleven and stay until seven or eight. My annual appraisal I got bollocked for leaving at half five, it didn't show commitment apparently...

So, I started coming in half nine or ten, and leaving at six or half six. Next appraisal was all about how much harder I was working now, how much better I was doing... despite the fact I was doing a good couple of hours less a day(!)

But, she could see me at my desk(!)

Yep was the same in my last job when I suggested working from home where I could concentrate with no distractions.

Turns out the distractions was doing other people's work for them so overall the business ran much smoother but none of my stuff actually got done...

Yes, why should you work when you are sick? Why should you spread the virus around the workplace if you don't have to.

There is nothing virtuous about presenteeism.

I worked at a place where it was seen as a badge of honour to stay late as if it was almost a good thing you didn’t have time to get your work done in the day.

The same place we were contracted to work 36.5 hours per week but my Director pulled me in because I was ‘letting’ my team leave an hour ‘early’ each week even though that was their contracted hours and all of them worked over that anyway!

Three hours we spent ‘debating it’ one night and his argument was our contracts said it was neither a minimum or a maximum so he thought that was some kind of out. He even went to HR about it who just replied it wasn’t a minimum or a maximum like that was some sort of answer.

Needless to say my team continued to take their hour and fuck all was said again.

He was a c**t though who once added to an SLT away day agenda that morale (which was on its arse) was not an item that we could talk about with him.

I'm pretty sure there's millions who have absolutely no choice in working when they have a cold. I'd still go to work with a runny nose.

Do people not leave the house, go shopping or do anything else when they only have a cold?

Would be interesting the percentage of work force in the UK who have full sick pay with no negative downsides to being off. (I'm not saying it's right, just how it is)
