I'm going to the Pyrenees in September. Not strictly a holiday as i've got a race there half way through. Staying just on the French side, but racing across the border in Spain. Hoping to get out in the mountains as much as possible, but not exert myself too much prior to the race.

Flights were a bit of a pain.... the only thing remotely convenient was flying Birmingham - Biarritz, via Paris, and those flights were expensive (and the times have changed since i booked them!)

Fuerteventura for 17 nights at xmas.

The dream is still the Northern Lights in Norway, a trip up the Fjords, a jaunt on the Flam railway…Lake Constance on the Austrian side…and the Ryukyu Islands and Okinawa in Japan, before I toddle off this mortal coil.

Doesn’t seem likely though. Maybe a weekend in the fecking Mumbles again.

Anyone been to Romania?

2025 ice hockey world championships are in Sfantu Gheorghe, was hoping it might be relatively affordable.

Been to Bucharest, first impressions weren’t great but people were welcoming, and reasonably priced for a Capital City.
Did an annual game aboard thing and watch Rapid Bucharest, 15k of fans but the noise is unreal.
Did a day trip to Draculas Castle which was worth it too.

Been about 20 times to various different places but not Sfantu Gheorge.

However, just Google mapped it and can see it is just outside of Brasov which I have been to a few times and it’s in a beautiful part of Romania surrounded by the mountains.

Brasov itself is pretty cheap and does get a number of tourists so plenty of restaurants and bars. I really enjoyed it there so I would probably recommend staying there.

Persuaded my partner to go to a gig in Paris to see a band I’ve become obsessed with (out of nowhere).

However I insisted it won’t cost much; flights I can get pretty cheap, but any hints/tips on reasonably priced places to stay?

Last year we stayed in Val D’Europe and just took the RER into Paris when we wanted to. A bunch of quite cheap hotels and apart hotels which suited us nicely. Also just a stop away from Disney if that interests you

Los Angeles and moved. No season ticket to me, another iFollow year!
Highlight of my trips home though to get to see the city so I usually try and cram in as many as I can

I was not at planning on going away this summer as we're now anticipating the arrival of baby #3

This constant pissing weather though is making me think about seeing what I could possibly get for as cheap as possible.

Any recommendations here for places to look?

As I wise person once told me 'you'll never be rich having more than 2 kids', and they were right!

And on that bombshell, congratulations FP and family!

My kids left home 15/more years ago and I still go camping and staying on free French Aires de Camping Car.
It takes a while to recover financially!
Having said that, we've booked a two-hotel fortnight in Rhodes and Turkey next April through English Heritage.
Not as cheap as an Aire, but bloody good value.
Camping and (driving to) a cheapo apartment in Galicia this year though.

Away in Malaga at the moment flying back ready for the Oxford game. What a stunning City though, so clean, bars, restaurants shops all mixing together. The Market with tapas bars, museums, harbourside and a big long clean beach. One of my favourite Cities I've ever visited.

I think most people are aware of it just from being the airport for the resorts on the Costa del Sol which got a bad rep for boozed up Brits, but my ex-boss moved there so i know more about the city and sounds great.

Zagreb is a fantastic city to spend a long weekend, but it's difficult to find flights from the UK, so it ain't cheap, sadly.

EDIT - not able to comment on Christmas markets there

Ghent in Belgium is good, did that one last year and it was better than Brugge to be honest.

Nordic countries a bit more expensive but very magical if you're lucky to get some snow.

The Coventry Christmas Market is set to dazzle visitors in 2024, running from November 18th through December 22nd. This vibrant event transforms the heart of the city into a winter wonderland.

Located primarily around Broadgate, the market offers a picturesque backdrop of twinkling lights and festive decorations. The central location makes it easily accessible for both locals and tourists alike.

Strolling through this charming area, you’ll discover delightful wooden chalets filled with unique gifts and delicious treats.

With ample space to explore, you can immerse yourself in the holiday spirit while enjoying live entertainment throughout your visit. Whether you’re shopping for others or treating yourself, there’s something special waiting just around every corner at this beloved market.

Most towns in northern France have some sort of market with a few more actual market stalls to buy stuff than Birmingham, which is exclusively beer, gluhwein, sausages and pissed-up chavs. Arras is a lovely city and their christmas market is pretty good. Only an hour from Calais, so can be done pretty cheaply.

We visited Brugge last year and was majorly disappointed with it to be honest. Was getting close to windmilling a crowd of them at one point.

I like Brugge/Bruges as a city to go for three days or so, but can't see a Christmas market being any different to most cities, tbh.

Annecy too is slightly different, Malaga is meant to be great at Christmas too, I'm really bigging it up I know
Riga I loved but went in May, can be really cold in December the same as Tallin, both would be really Christmassy though.

Annecy is beautiful - we make an overnight stop there when we are going skiing, and it is lovely in winter.
We went to Budapest when they they were just setting up for the Christmas market, but it was fucking freezing!!

To complete the Baltic trio, went to Vilnius in February a few years back.

It was positively Dickensian. Asked the taxi driver if it had been snowing long.

"About three months" he replied.

Lovely place, but fucking cold in the winter.

If you like that area of the world, then Google 'Baltic chain'. Truly remarkable.
